Get Better Cooling and 3x the Value with Octave
When it comes to the Canadian mattress industry, Tempur-Pedic and Octave are two brands that stand out. They both sell an assortment of mattresses across different price points. For this review, we’re going to focus on their most affordable (and popular) models: the TEMPUR-Cloud and the Octave Vista. Each mattress has three foam layers and comes in a single firmness option. However, that’s where the similarities end.
Octave mattresses are engineered using advanced cooling features for unmatched coolness and comfort. The entry-level Octave Vista (accessibly priced at $899 CAD for a queen) has cooling features like:
- A CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibre cover
- Heat-dissipating copper-infused memory foam infused with phase-change material
- Multi-zone support foam integrated with air channels
Octave provides more motion isolation, pressure relief, and full-body support than Tempur-Pedic. This is thanks to Octave Vista’s multi-zone support foam and thicker foam layers. With a balanced medium-firm feel, Octave keeps you cool and comfortable all night.
Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud costs nearly $2,000 more than Octave Vista. Tempur-Pedic is sold primarily through resellers who add expensive margins to the product. The mattress is also subject to mattress tariffs for US-made brands sold in Canada. Octave is sold online, avoiding expensive store leases. This means Octave can be sold for a much lower price, even though it uses comparable materials and technology.
Tempur-Pedic also has only one cooling feature: a mattress cover made of polyester and spandex. These materials are not known for their cooling properties so you can expect overheating. This is especially true because memory foam is known for trapping heat and requires advanced cooling features to balance temperatures. Octave has significantly more features to help keep temperatures low.
Tempur-Pedic offers a 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. In comparison, Octave’s sleep trial is 365 nights. That’s 4x as long as Tempur-Pedic’s at-home trial. Octave also provides a 15-year warranty, which is five years longer than Tempur-Pedic’s.
If you decide to return or exchange your new mattress, be aware that many Tempur-Pedic customers have complained of frustrating experiences with the company. Tempur-Pedic currently has a “Bad” rating on Trustpilot, based on hundreds of customer complaints. This is the worst rating possible. Octave’s online reputation is stellar in comparison. This is proven by Octave’s A+ BBB rating, “Excellent” Trustpilot rating, and 5,000+ five-star reviews.
Consider Tempur-Pedic if you want:
- A widely recognized mattress brand and the price isn’t important to you
- A 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty
- A very firm mattress
- A breathable, temperature-regulating top cover
- A mattress that’s suitable for back and stomach sleepers
Buy Octave if you want:
- A 365-night risk-free sleep trial and a 15-year warranty
- A queen-size memory foam mattress for under $1,000
- Multiple cooling features, including copper-infused memory foam and phase-change material
- A balanced medium-firm feel that’s ideal for side, back, and stomach sleepers
- A Canadian-made mattress with a machine-washable cover
- Free shipping, returns, and pickups in major metro areas
- To buy from a company with an “A+” BBB rating and an “Excellent” Trustpilot rating
- A free sleep bundle that comes with a cotton sheet set, mattress protector, pillow protector(s), and pillow(s)

Both Tempur-Pedic and Octave are well-known mattress brands. Tempur-Pedic got its start developing aircraft seat cushions for NASA. Octave is a newcomer to the mattress industry, but it carries on the legacy of its former brand: Novosbed. So, what are the backgrounds of these two mattress lines?
Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic got its start in 1992. The company found some of the earliest uses for memory foam by designing shock-absorbing aircraft seat cushions for NASA. Tempur-Pedic then used their TEMPUR® material to launch mattress products for consumers. In 2012, Tempur-Pedic merged with the Sealy Corporation to become Tempur-Sealy, the world’s largest bedding company.
For years, Tempur-Pedic has been the gold standard in foam mattresses. Recently, however, Canadian brands like Octave are manufacturing foam mattresses with near-identical features. These mattresses are delivered to consumers’ doors for almost a third of the cost of a Tempur-Pedic.
Octave
Octave is the next step in the evolution of the Novosbed mattress. The Vista, Mirage, and Horizon models are designed to enhance the Canadian sleep experience and provide greater cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief than the popular Novosbed.
The Octave brand is owned by GoodMorning.com. This direct-to-customer mattress company has sold over 350,000 mattresses across the United States and Canada in the last 10 years. GoodMorning.com maintains an A+ rating on Better Business Bureau and an “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot.

It’s more convenient than ever to order a mattress online and get it delivered to your front door. You don’t even have to be home to accept it. A bed-in-a-box makes it easy to try a mattress at home and make sure it’s right for you.
Both Octave and Tempur-Pedic use FedEx to deliver mattresses throughout most parts of Canada. Tempur-Pedic ships in about 5–7 days, while Octave is more like 3–10. If you live in a remote location, FedEx may transfer your package to a local courier for delivery. Additional shipping costs may apply in this situation.
As with any other bed-in-a-box brand, Octave heavily promotes its 365-night sleep trial. This is four times as long as Tempur-Pedic’s 90-night trial. Octave will pick up your mattress and provide a full refund if you return your mattress. In comparison, Tempur-Pedic deducts a $175 return fee if you used the company’s free shipping option when ordering.
Tempur-Pedic requires you to sleep on the mattress for 30 nights before returning it. This leaves only 60 days to complete your refund. If you do get a refund, it should be processed in 1–2 days. According to some Trustpilot reviews, however, it isn’t always easy to get a refund.

Both the Octave and Tempur-Pedic mattress were delivered to us within the expected timeframe. Both mattresses were protected by heavy-duty plastic layers. Octave Vista shipped in a white cardboard box, while the TEMPUR-Cloud arrived in a reusable bag.
Keep the information that came with your shipment, like the sleep trial and return policy. You should also keep the bag your mattress arrived in, just in case you want to return it.
Tempur-Pedic
The Tempur-Pedic mattress was contained inside a reusable shipping bag. It was protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic. The inner layer compressed the mattress in a vacuum seal and the exterior layer kept it tightly bound in its cylinder shape. Instructions are included in the shipping bag for easier unpacking.
Customers will need to unwrap the outer layer of plastic to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, compressed form. Unroll the mattress in a large space, remove the wrapping, and wait five minutes for it to decompress. The TEMPUR-Cloud can take up to 72 hours to reach its full size, depending on the room temperature.
Octave
The Octave mattress box was sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will need scissors or a knife to open the packaging. To prevent potential harm to yourself or your new mattress, be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.
The compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a “tip-and-pull” motion to slowly slide the mattress out of its cardboard packaging. Tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, then pull the box away from the bundled mattress. It’s best to do this in the room where you plan to use the mattress.
Place the rolled-up mattress onto the designated bed frame. Next, like the end of a roll of tape, find where the outer layer of plastic begins and start peeling it back. Use the momentum of unrolling the mattress along the bed frame to help remove this layer.
Finally, cut and remove the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal is now broken, and the Octave mattress will begin to decompress. The Octave Vista should reach its full height in a few minutes and is sleep-ready on the day it’s unpacked. The mattress will completely decompress within a few days.

The Octave Vista and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud are both three-layer memory foam mattresses. Both are available in Canada in one firmness option.
However, that is where the similarities end. Octave Vista comes with numerous cooling features, including a cooling nanofibre cover, CopperGel™ memory foam infused with phase-change material, and multi-zone support foam with built-in air channels. All of these features provide excellent temperature balancing and breathability.
Memory foam mattresses are known for sleeping hot without advanced cooling features. However, the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud’s only promoted cooling feature is its polyester and spandex mattress cover. Even that may not be effective at keeping temperatures comfortable, as these materials aren’t known for their cooling properties.

TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Layers
The 10” TEMPUR-Cloud Medium has three foam layers and a non-removable, 360-degree stretch mattress cover.
- Comfort Layer: TEMPUR® comfort layer, which is described as soft, responsive, and cushioning. Layer thickness and foam density are unspecified.
- Transition Layer: TEMPUR® support layer. This firmer layer slowly adjusts to fit your body and offers pressure relief. Layer thickness and density are unspecified.
- Support Layer: Premium foam base layer that gives support, durability, and structure to the mattress. Layer thickness and density are unspecified.
Octave Mattress Layers
The 12” Octave Vista is a three-layer memory foam mattress that delivers an exceptional blend of cool, cushioned support.
- Comfort Layer: 2” of CopperGel™ memory foam, paired with moisture-wicking PolarMAX® phase-change material. This high-performance layer pulls heat and sweat away from your body for a cooler, more comfortable sleep. As an antimicrobial metal, copper can also help reduce bacteria and maintain the cleanliness of your mattress.
- Transition Layer: 2” of premium Elastex® foam. This responsive, body-contouring middle layer feels and responds like natural latex. It adds a little extra bounce to your sleep so you can shift positions more easily.
- Support Layer: 8” high-density, ultra-durable motion isolation support foam to help you stay asleep, even with a restless partner. This layer also contains air channels to let warm air escape and fresh air flow through.
Tempur-Pedic vs Octave Mattress Cover
Tempur-Pedic
Octave
Tempur-Pedic Mattress Cover
The TEMPUR-Cloud cover has a soft white colour scheme with a charcoal-grey bottom. It has a subtle textured pattern and curved indentations running along the mattress. The material is a 360-degree stretch which, according to Tempur-Pedic, promotes airflow, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties.
However, some US customers report they sleep hot on the mattress. This is not surprising because polyester and spandex aren’t breathable fabrics. Polyester in particular can retain heat.
It is possible that Tempur-Pedic could have specially engineered a cooling fabric blend. Without any information about such a blend, though, we can only assume the top cover is not cool enough to balance out the heat-trapping qualities of memory foam.
The cover is not removable or machine-washable and can only be spot-treated. The Tempur-Pedic logo, mattress model, and firmness level are all visible on the bottom half of the mattress.
Octave Mattress Cover
Octave Vista is refreshingly cool to the touch, thanks to CryoFusion™ nanofibres in the top cover. The upgraded models—Mirage and Horizon—are even cooler with more nanofibres. These nanofibre-infused fabrics have excellent breathability and moisture-wicking properties.
The cover features a swirling, blue-grey pattern that is unique to each mattress on a white background with waterfall edges. The removable, machine-washable cover connects to the navy blue base with a sturdy yet stylish zipper.
Tempur-Pedic vs Octave: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Octave
Feel & Firmness
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud and Octave Vista vary in feel and firmness:
- TEMPUR-Cloud is considered a firm mattress and is rated at 8.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. This mattress won’t have much sink to it and may be best for stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers.
- Octave Vista is a medium-firm mattress and is rated at 6.8 / 10 on the firmness scale. That means it will be slightly on the firmer side while striking a good balance of comfort and support. Medium-firm mattresses are a great choice for most Canadian sleepers, as they tend to suit the widest range of body types and sleep styles.
Tempur-Pedic
Octave
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support. The TEMPUR-Cloud is typical in this respect, but Octave Vista stands out with a considerably higher edge support score. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the TEMPUR-Cloud and Octave Vista perform as follows:
- The TEMPUR-Cloud has average edge support at 5.4 / 10. This design does not have sidewalls so sleepers may have some difficulty getting out of bed.
- The Octave mattress has above-average edge support, at 7.5 / 10 on the edge support scale. Sleepers should be able to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed and get up without difficulty.
Tempur-Pedic
Octave
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good. This is one of the main reasons couples switch from innerspring to memory foam. However, according to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Octave Vista and TEMPUR-Cloud mattresses provide very different levels of motion isolation:
- The TEMPUR-Cloud has below-average motion isolation at 4.6 / 10. Sleepers may feel some amount of movement from their partner, kids, or pets.
- The Octave mattress has above-average motion isolation, at 7.3 / 10 on the motion isolation scale. Sleepers shouldn’t notice movements from the other side of the mattress.
Tempur-Pedic
Octave
Bounce
Because foam mattresses excel at motion isolation, their bounce ratings are generally very low. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Octave Vista mattress and TEMPUR-Cloud mattress have almost identical below-average bounce scores:
- The TEMPUR-Cloud is rated at 3.6 / 10 on the bounce scale. Unlike the Octave Vista, the TEMPUR-Cloud doesn’t have a layer of Elastex® or other springy foam for added responsiveness. This means you will likely struggle to change positions while you sleep.
- The Octave mattress is rated at 3.7 / 10 on the bounce scale. This can be attributed to its high motion isolation and foam composition. The layer of premium Elastex® foam will prevent you from getting “stuck” in the mattress, thanks to its springiness and responsiveness. This makes it easier to shift positions or get out of bed.

Should you buy Tempur-Pedic or Octave?
When it comes to shopping for a memory foam mattress, Tempur-Pedic and Octave are two brands that hold their own in the Canadian mattress market. However, there are several factors that clearly set Octave apart from Tempur-Pedic:
- More Cooling: Octave mattresses are engineered using leading-edge cooling features, like a CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibre cover, copper-infused memory foam, and phase-change material. These features help dissipate heat to offer an unmatched experience of coolness and comfort. This level of cool comfort is essential for better sleep quality and overall wellbeing.
- Better Performance: Octave offers impressive edge support, motion isolation, and pressure relief. This is due in part to a strong combination of memory foam and multi-zoned support foam.
- Stronger Online Reputation: Octave is rated “A+” on Better Business Bureau and “Excellent” on Trustpilot. In comparison, Tempur-Pedic Canada has 1/5 customer review stars on Better Business Bureau, and the Tempur-Sealy Corporation is rated “Bad” on Trustpilot.
- Greater Value: The Octave Vista comes with a 365-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, and free bedding bundle, all for only $899 for a queen. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud has only a 90-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty. It also costs over 3x as much as Octave Vista at $2,799 for a queen.
With these factors in mind, Octave is a smart choice for a cool, restful night’s sleep.
* Octave was named Canada’s Best Cooling Mattress by Best Health Magazine, which has an existing business relationship with GoodMorning.com.
