Endy and Octave are two well-known mattress brands in Canada, with both brands having built up a loyal customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of these two popular mattress lines?

Endy

Endy is a bed-in-a-box mattress brand owned by Sleep Country, Canada’s largest chain of mattress retail stores. The company has been selling its “one-size-fits-all” foam mattress since 2015, competing with other online brands like Casper and Douglas. Endy mattresses are made in Ontario and Quebec and shipped out from distribution centres in Ontario and British Columbia. In 2022, the company expanded its mattress lineup with the Endy Hybrid, a more firm version of their foam mattress mixing foam and coils.

Octave

Octave is the next step in the evolution of the Novosbed mattress. The Vista, Mirage, and Horizon models are designed to enhance the Canadian sleep experience and provide greater cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief than the popular Novosbed.

Octave and Endy both use FedEx to deliver their mattresses directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. Shipping times for Octave and Endy are roughly the same: around 7–10 days for most of Canada. If you live in a remote location, the shipper may transfer your package to a local courier for delivery. Additional shipping costs may apply.

Like any other bed-in-a-box brand, Octave heavily promotes its in-home sleep trial. With Octave, you’ll receive a full 365 nights vs only 100 nights for Endy. That’s more than three times as long.

If a customer decides to return their Octave or Endy mattress within the sleep trial period, the company will arrange to pick up the mattresses and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for either the Endy mattress or the Octave mattress.

Both the Octave mattress and the Endy mattress were delivered to us within the expected time frame. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers to protect the mattresses during shipping. The Octave mattress was shipped in a white cardboard box, while the Endy mattress was shipped in a bleached cardboard box.

Keep the information you received with your shipment, like the sleep trial and return policy, as well as the plastic bag the mattress was shipped in, just in case you want to return it. It’s OK to recycle the box, as the expanded mattress would not fit back into it.

Both the Endy and Octave mattress boxes were sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the packaging. To prevent potential harm to yourself or your new mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out of its cardboard packaging. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most practical to complete this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.

The Endy and Octave mattresses were protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic—an inner layer to compress it in a vacuum seal and an exterior layer to keep it tightly bound in its cylinder shape. Instructions are included in the shipping bag for easier unpacking. For easier setup, we recommend placing the rolled-up mattress onto the designated bed frame.

Like the end of a roll of tape, find where the outer layer of plastic begins and start peeling it back. You can use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to help remove the rest of this layer, which could be up to a few metres long. After completing this process, the mattress will rest unrolled before you.

Next, cut and remove the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal is now broken, and your new mattress will begin to decompress. A bed-in-a-box mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes to a few days. Both the Octave and Endy mattresses expanded to their full height within a few minutes.

Octave and Endy are three-layer combination foam mattresses. Both are available in one firmness option (medium-firm), and each comes compressed, rolled, and shipped in a box.

Some of the major differences between the Endy vs Octave mattresses are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary in composition, height, and density.

Octave Vista has numerous cooling features, including a cooling nanofibre cover, CopperGel™ memory foam infused with phase-change material to balance body temperature, and multi-zone support foam with built-in air channels for better air circulation.

Endy’s mattress comes with a top layer of proprietary Endy comfort foam, which Endy claims will provide optimal comfort and temperature performance. This layer also provides a fair bit of “hug.” The transition and support layers help the mattress support and conform to the body.

The Endy mattress is made out of 3 layers of foam and has height of 10″.

• Comfort Layer: The topmost layer of the Endy mattress comprises 2” of Endy comfort foam. This layer is expertly crafted to offer supreme comfort and optimal temperature regulation.*
• Transition Layer: The middle layer is a 3” slab of polyurethane foam. Working in tandem with the comfort layer, it extends additional support and adeptly moulds to the body’s contours.
• Support Layer: The final layer is a 5” deep polyurethane foam layer. This foundational layer lends structure to the Endy mattress and prevents sleepers from sinking too deep.

*Endy remains elusive about the density specifics for their top foam layer. However, the density of the second and third layers of the Endy mattress is recorded as 1.8 lbs/ft³.

Octave Mattress Layers

The 12” Octave Vista mattress contains 3 layers of premium foam.

• Comfort Layer: The top layer of Octave Vista is 2″ of copper-infused gel memory foam, paired with moisture-wicking PolarMAX® phase-change material. This high-performance layer pulls heat and sweat away from your body for a cooler, more comfortable sleep. Copper is also an antimicrobial metal, which helps reduce bacteria and maintain the cleanliness of your mattress.
• Transition Layer: The responsive, body-contouring middle layer is composed of 2″ premium Elastex® foam that feels like natural latex. It adds a little extra bounce to your sleep so you can shift positions more easily.
• Support Layer: Octave’s bottom layer is constructed from 8” of high-density, ultra-durable motion isolation support foam to help you stay asleep, even with a restless partner. This layer also contains air channels to let warm air escape and fresh air flow through.

The Endy mattress has a two-tone cover. The bottom part of the cover is a heavier-duty grey fabric, and the top part is white with a diamond-knit pattern. The top part of the cover is made primarily of polyester and contains a small amount of Lycra for stretch.

Unlike Octave, Endy does not highlight having eco-conscious fabric. The top portion of the Endy mattress cover can be unzipped and cleaned in the washing machine as needed.

Octave Vista is cool to the touch, thanks to CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres in the top cover. The upgraded Octave models—Mirage and Horizon—are even cooler, with more nanofibres. The mattress cover features a swirling, blue-grey pattern that is unique to each mattress on a white background with waterfall edges. The removable, machine-washable cover, which is eco-consciously produced, connects to the navy blue base with a sturdy yet stylish zipper.

• Octave Vista has a slightly higher firmness score with a rating of 6.8 / 10. While this score is slightly on the firmer side, the Octave mattress strikes a more balanced feel, making it feel comfortable yet supportive.

Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support, but Octave and Endy both beat this trend. The testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us) revealed similarly strong edge support ratings between the Endy and Octave mattresses:

• The Endy mattress has above-average edge support, at 7.3 / 10 on the edge support scale. Despite this good score, with Endy’s “sinking” layer, you may notice more softness when sitting on the edge of the bed.
• The Octave mattress has above-average edge support, at 7.5 / 10 on the edge support scale. You can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed with minimal “sink.”

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good, along with pressure-point relief. This is often one of the main reasons couples switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Endy vs Octave mattress motion isolation ratings are both above average:

• The Endy has above-average motion isolation, at 7.4 / 10 on the motion isolation scale. This score means that for the most part, your partner or pet’s movements shouldn’t disrupt your sleep.
• The Octave Vista mattress scored similarly well to The Endy with an above-average score of 7.3 / 10 on the motion isolation scale. If having a mattress with great motion isolation is important to you, the Octave mattress would be a great choice.

Bounce

• The Endy is rated at 5.5 / 10 on the bounce scale. However, The Endy doesn’t have a layer of Elastex® or other springy foam (like Octave Vista does) to help you shift positions in bed more easily. Despite The Endy’s medium amount of bounce, you may have trouble changing from one sleep position to another.
• The Octave mattress is rated at 3.7 / 10 on the bounce scale. This can be attributed to its high motion isolation and foam composition. The layer of premium Elastex® foam will prevent you from getting “stuck” in the mattress, thanks to its springiness and responsiveness, making it easier to shift positions or get out of bed.
