Winner! 2021 Product of the Year™
Voted the top choice overall in the Mattress-in-a-Box category according to a survey of 4,000 Canadians by Kantar.
"Canada's Best Mattress" Remains the Best in 2024
Douglas entered the mattress-in-a-box market in 2017 and quickly gained popularity for its high quality and enticingly low prices. In fact, for the last several years, the Douglas Original mattress has been our #1 pick on our annual list of best mattresses, compared to over 120 popular competitors.
Douglas ($599+) has become Canada’s top competitor to brands like Endy ($675+), Casper ($895+), and the Bloom Cloud mattress ($899+). The brand has also continued to innovate with two upgraded mattresses: Douglas Alpine and Douglas Summit.
Every Douglas mattress has the same “medium-firm” feel that is extremely popular with Canadian sleepers. Medium-firm mattresses provide comfort and support to side, back, and stomach sleepers, and accommodate a wide variety of body types.
According to the company’s founders, brothers Sam and Andy Prochazka, the first Douglas mattress was created because too many mattresses sold in Canada were made for the needs of American sleepers. Every Douglas mattress is designed exclusively for Canadian preferences, values, and climate conditions, without expensive tariffs that raise the price.
The made-in-Canada Douglas mattress offers cooling, pressure-point relief, exceptional motion isolation, and even more features that make it stand out from competitors. And judging by the thousands of five-star reviews on the company’s website, Douglas also hits the mark for product quality and customer service.
Now Douglas offers you even more value for your dollar. Each mattress purchase on Douglas.ca comes with a bundle of accessories that includes a sheet set, mattress protector, pillow(s), and pillow protector(s). You can combine this deal on even more discounts on related sleep accessories.
What’s Different Between Douglas Original & Douglas Alpine?
The 11-inch-tall Douglas Alpine uses the same CoolSense® cover and three layers of foam as the 10-inch Douglas Original, but rebalanced to enhance certain comfort features. Get more cooling gel, add a layer of extra-cool phase-change material, and take pressure relief and motion isolation up a notch.
What’s Different Between Douglas Original & Douglas Summit?
Douglas Summit has the same cooling features as Douglas Alpine, but adds a mattress cover containing cooling nanofibers. This 12-inch mattress also has thicker layers than either the Original or Alpine, creating more pressure relief and motion isolation for the ultimate sleep experience.
Now with a 365-Night Sleep Trial
In 2023, Douglas announced a major expansion to its at-home sleep trial. With any Douglas mattress purchase, you now have up to 365 nights to try out the mattress in your own bedroom, with the option to return the mattress for a full refund if you’re not satisfied.
⭐ The Douglas sleep trial is almost 4x longer than the 100-night trial offered by most other online mattress companies. Sure, 100 nights might sound like lots of time to decide, but that’s only one season. And as any Canadian knows, the weather changes quickly.
What if you’re a hot sleeper but you’re mattress shopping in the winter? Not to worry—you can return your mattress at any time of year within your 365-night trial if you find the mattress doesn’t meet your needs. Other mattress brands can’t say the same.
Still a Lower Price than Casper and Other American Mattresses
For just $799 CAD for a queen-size mattress, Douglas Original sells for almost half the price of the Casper Original, a similar-sized mattress without cooling gel or a washable cover. Douglas Original started the Douglas company tradition of driving down prices for top-quality sleep products, and maintains that tradition today.

★★★★★
“I have suffered from lower back pain for decades and could never ever find the right mattress until I found Douglas about 8 years ago. I bought a King size for me and my spouse and my low back pain was gone, something I had not experienced for decades.
Fast forward 8 years and I slipped and fell in my driveway on some ice while I was clearing snow. I ended up injuring my spinal cord at L3 (lower back) and as a result I became a Paraplegic with severe pain. I then purchased another Twin XL from you and an adjustable bed frame from Amazon (because you were out of stock at the time), instead of the hospital bed they recommended I buy at 3x the cost.
Let me tell you, if there is anyone that has tested your products long term, and tested them for severe medical problems that would be me. I can tell you without a doubt your mattresses are just simply amazing. I have severe body and neuropathic pain daily as a result of my spinal cord injury that doesn’t respond well to any of the medications they have given me. Any time my pain is really bad I have to lay down and I do that on your mattress and the majority of my pain just simply melts away. No medication, just a mattress in an adjustable position.
So I wanted to tell you my story and feel free to share it on your website. You are hands down the best mattress for spinal cord injuries and seriously you should be selling them to medical supply stores because they are charging 3x the price for inferior products that would require me to take more medication just cope with it. Anyway, thank you from the bottom of my heart for such an amazing product. I plug your product to everyone I can because I’m a believer!”

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
Douglas mattresses can be purchased online at Douglas.ca.
The mattress arrives at your door in a cardboard box and is shipped free of charge across Canada. In some regions, you can waive the necessary signature and have the mattress dropped off while you’re away from home. For some remote locations, additional shipping charges may apply.
The Unboxing
Once unboxed and out of the packaging, Douglas expands to its full, 10-inch height in less than a minute. You can sleep on your Douglas Original the same night it arrives.
The Look
The overall appearance of the mattress is attractive and streamlined. Since the company is based in Canada, the red and white colour scheme and mountain-inspired design details are a fun homage to the brand’s roots. The crisp, white knit cover has a diamond-shaped quilted pattern that is exceptionally soft to the touch. The iconic red zipper makes it easy to unzip and wash the top cover whenever needed.
The Feel
Like the other two Douglas mattresses, the Original comes in a single medium-firm feel.
Medium-firm is a popular choice with Canadians, as it caters to all sleep style and a very wide range of body weights. Douglas Original offers a solid base for lower back support and spinal alignment, but provides more pressure-point relief and cushioning than traditional firm mattresses. That’s especially important if you have sensitive joints or a lean figure.
The Douglas Original is surprisingly cool to the touch for a foam mattress. It also supports the body evenly. Unlike dense memory foam mattresses, the Original does not form noticeable body grooves as it contours to your body.
Douglas Mattress Review: How Engineers Scored the Douglas
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.

How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Douglas |
---|---|
Firmness: | 6.7 / 10 |
Edge support: | 7.8 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 8.3 / 10 |
Bounce: | 3.1 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
All three Douglas mattresses were designed to be “medium-firm.” That means they are slightly on the firmer side, but they provide a bit more cushioning than you would expect from a firm mattress. This also makes it easier to find the mattress that’s right for you.
The Douglas Original received a firmness rating of 6.7 / 10, which is where you would expect a medium-firm mattress to land on the firmness spectrum. Sleepers will find that the foam conforms nicely to the body as they settle into the sleep surface. The three responsive foam layers promote gentle contouring and softness while still maintaining proper spinal alignment for all sleep styles.
Medium-firm mattresses are a great choice for most Canadian sleepers. It tends to suit the widest range of body types and sleep styles. So if you are sharing a bed, are unsure of which firmness to choose, or are furnishing a guest room that several different sleepers will occupy over time, your best choice is a medium-firm mattress like the Douglas Original.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are generally known for low motion transfer and good pressure-point relief, not for edge support. Unless you spend a lot of time sitting along the edge of the mattress, have reduced mobility, or require extra support to get out of bed, robust edges are more of a luxury than a must-have.
The Douglas Original earned a great edge support score, especially for an all-foam mattress. According to the third-party engineers we commission to test and rate every mattress we review, the Douglas Original earned a high edge support rating of 7.8 / 10.
Mattresses with higher edge support are less likely to collapse when people sit at the sides or foot of the bed. Additional support at the sidewalls makes getting off the mattress more comfortable and is especially helpful for people who may have mobility issues.
When compared to other foam mattresses, Douglas earns quite a high ranking for its edge support. Douglas Original has a better edge support rating than the Casper Original mattress (5.0) or Endy mattress (3.9).
Motion Isolation
Many people love foam mattresses for their superior motion-isolation. Douglas doesn’t disappoint in this category. With an 8.3 / 10 rating, the Douglas Original tests exceptionally well for motion isolation. If you are a light sleeper or share your bed with a partner, consider Douglas for your next mattress.
No other mattress brand rates better for motion isolation than Douglas. We have now tested and reviewed over 120 popular mattresses for motion isolation. Of all those mattresses, the three Douglas models – the Original, Alpine, and Summit – have earned three of the four best scores ever recorded, including the two top ratings.
Good motion isolation is essential for a good night’s sleep. Even small disturbances can disrupt restorative deep sleep and REM cycles, replacing them with less-restorative light sleep. You may not even recognize the effects of fragmented sleep at first, but repeated over many nights, it can lead to chronic fatigue and sluggishness. A mattress with excellent motion isolation can help rejuvenate your body by minimizing disturbance and prolonging your restorative sleep cycles.
Bounce
While some sleepers enjoy more responsive mattresses that offer the body momentum in getting up and off the mattress, others may prefer a mattress that absorbs compression and neutralizes movement. The superior motion isolation and use of specialty foams ensure sleepers experience almost no bounce when laying on the Douglas.
According to testing by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Douglas Original has a bounce rating of 3.2 / 10. This score is typical of an all-foam mattress. The Original has the solid base of support necessary to provide some bounce, but this mattress is better known for its motion-isolating qualities.
Light sleepers generally prefer mattresses with very little bounce because they feel less motion transfer from their sleep partner moving or getting out of bed. If you enjoy a springier sleep surface, a foam mattress is probably not for you. Check out our curated list of Best Hybrid Mattresses instead.

Douglas proudly promotes its use of eco-conscious materials. If you’re interested in sustainability, you’ll appreciate the efforts the brand has taken to lower its carbon footprint across the entire manufacturing process.
The choice to develop and source environmentally conscious components doesn’t come at a sacrifice to quality. Douglas feels plush and supportive and delivers on the comfort that people have come to appreciate from popular bed-in-a-box brands.
Douglas Mattress Layers
- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Douglas Mattress Cover
Douglas’s patented CoolSense® cover is made from sustainable Infinitex™ fibres. This plant-derived fabric draws moisture away from the surface of the mattress, leaving you with a dry sleep surface. Not only does this help to reduce the chances of odour building up where you sleep, but the cover’s natural breathability also helps to improve air circulation throughout the mattress layers. This breathable gradient allows Douglas’s ecoLight® cooling gel foam to keep your body at a comfortable temperature.
Are you craving an even cooler sleep? Consider upgrading to the Douglas Alpine mattress. Its cooling features include phase-change material that redistributes your body heat on warm nights, and focuses the heat to keep you warm on cold nights. Perfect for every season in Canada.
Cleaning & Care Instructions
When it comes to care and general upkeep, the machine-washable top cover has a 360° zipper for easy removal. Once the cover has been cleaned, it can be reattached in seconds without lifting or moging the mattress.
How to clean the removable top cover:
- Unzip the upper portion of the cover.
- Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle.
- Tumble dry on low or air dry.
Brand Bio: What's the Story Behind Douglas?
Douglas is the top-selling mattress brand by GoodMorning.com, Canada’s largest independent online mattress retailer.
The first Douglas mattress was introduced in 2017. At that time, the makers of Douglas recognized an obvious problem in the mattress industry: mattresses sold in Canada were being designed for American sleepers.
The Douglas Original mattress soon filled that gap by creating an extremely comfortable mattress that was:
- Manufactured in Canada using Canadian materials
- Designed for the unique firmness preferences Canadians love most
- Built to perform during all four Canadian seasons
- Made with eco-conscious materials and manufacturing processes
- Sold at the lowest possible price
Douglas quickly started outselling even well-established mattress brands, earning several accolades as Canada’s Best Mattress.
In 2022, Douglas introduced two new mattresses: the Alpine and the Summit. These upgraded models take the same features and values that made the Douglas Original such a success and enhance them with some of the latest innovations in mattress making.
