Will Savvy Canadian Shoppers Pay Nearly $2,000 for a Basic Two-layer Queen-Sized Mattress?
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a mattress sold online and by Sleep Country. The Original model has been refreshed over the years, but the price nearly doubled since our last update.
Among online mattresses, Tuft & Needle is one of the more well-known brands in the United States. In Canada, T&N offers only a small portion of the product assortment it has available for sale in the U.S.
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress has advantages that could appeal to shoppers looking for an all-foam mattress: 1) It has a proprietary blend of foam that claims to sleep cool and offer pressure relief; 2) it’s described by Tuft & Needle as having a firm feel; 3) and every T&N mattress purchased in Canada or the United States was made in the same country where the order was placed.
However, the Tuft & Needle Original mattress suffers from many of the downsides typical with many American-based online mattress brands: a HUGE price premium relative to many competitor mattresses. At $1,899 (for a queen), the Original is very expensive for what you get. You can get more features (three premium foam layers and a machine-washable cover) by opting for Douglas ($799), our Top Pick.

Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate Tuft & Needle Original?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.

How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Tuft & Needle Original |
---|---|
Firmness: | 6.6 / 10 |
Edge support: | 6.9 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 6.5 / 10 |
Bounce: | 4.1 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Tuft & Needle Original is rated at 6.6 / 10 on the firmness scale.
True to its claim, T&N Original is a medium-firm mattress.
This is the exact same firmness rating as our overall Top-Rated Foam Mattress: Douglas. However, Douglas has stronger edges and better motion isolation.
Medium-firm is one of the most popular feels among online mattress brands. That’s because it offers enough cushioning for pressure points, while also keeping the spine properly aligned for a variety of sleeping positions.
However, if you’re a heavier person (200+ lbs), you sleep mainly on your stomach or back, or you prefer a mattress with less sinkage and body contouring, you should consider a mattress with an available Firm option, like Logan & Cove.
Edge Support
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Tuft & Needle Original’s edge support rating is 6.9 / 10.
T&N Original ranks above-average in edge support among other foam mattresses tested.
If it’s important to you to own a mattress with strong edges that don’t compress much, you should consider a hybrid mattress instead. Hybrid mattresses feature a layer of coils for extra support — which is noticeable when lying or sitting near the edge of the mattress. One of our favourite hybrid mattresses is Logan & Cove.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to all-foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Tuft & Needle Original scored 6.5 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
T&N Original’s motion isolation score is about average compared to other foam mattresses tested on this site.
If you want a foam mattress that absorbs more body movement, there are better options. For example, Douglas’s motion isolation score is an impressive 8.3 / 10.
Bounce
Because foam mattresses tend to provide good motion isolation, that usually translates to a lower bounce rating compared to innerspring and hybrid mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Tuft & Needle Original’s bounce score is 4.1 / 10.
T&N Original’s bounce score places it about average compared to other foam mattresses tested on this site.
If you want a mattress with a bouncier sleep surface, consider shopping for a hybrid or innerspring mattress. The coil layer on these mattresses provide more “spring”, which helps with shifting into different sleeping positions throughout the night.

Support layer: | 7" base foam |

Tuft & Needle Original Mattress Layers
Tuft & Needle Original contains two layers of foam. Like other all-foam mattresses, the layers on this mattress work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.
- First layer: 3 inches of T&N Adaptive® foam. The top layer of foam cushions the body and provides pressure-point relief. This proprietary blend of foam contains graphite and cooling gel beads for better heat dissipation. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 7 inches of base support foam. This layer gives the mattress a strong foundation and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep. Layer density: Unspecified.
Of note: Foam density or origin information for Tuft & Needle mattresses is not publicly available.
Tuft & Needle Original Mattress Cover
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress cover is made from micro polyamide and polyester. It feels plush and soft to the touch. The entire surface of the cover is stitched in a grille-like pattern, which helps let body heat escape the sleep surface. The Tuft & Needle logo is at the foot of the mattress.
The top cover on Tuft & Needle mattresses is NOT machine washable and cannot be removed. To spot-clean spills or stains, T&N recommends gently scrubbing the cover with a mild detergent and then letting it air dry before replacing the sheets.

Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 by Daehee Park and JT Marino. The two software engineers got their start on the mattress scene by experimenting with selling mattresses online through Amazon. After just a few years, Tuft & Needle became one of the market leaders in the bed-in-box industry.
The T&N Original mattress is the latest iteration of the brand’s two-layer foam mattress. Tuft & Needle also sells the three-layer Mint mattress and a small selection of bedding products from their Canadian online store.
In 2018, Tuft & Needle merged with Serta Simmons Bedding.

Final Thoughts on Tuft & Needle Original
Particularly in the United States, Tuft & Needle has developed a strong position in the online mattress market. By getting an early start and amassing thousands of customer reviews, American-based Tuft & Needle remains a category leader.
The Tuft & Needle Original mattress has some standout qualities that could help it catch the eye of shoppers. Its proprietary foam sleeps cool; its medium-firm feel should suit a wide variety of bodies; and the above-average edge support is nice to see from an all-foam mattress.
But there are downsides. For some shoppers, the Tuft & Needle Original mattress might be too pricey for a two-layer foam mattress ($1,899 for a queen). That’s hundreds of dollars more than our Top-Rated Affordable Mattress, Juno ($499). T&N Original is also more expensive than our Top-Rated Overall Mattress, Douglas ($799). Douglas also has the benefit of having a machine-washable cover and an extra layer of foam. Both Juno and Douglas are from GoodMorning.com, a Canadian-based online mattress company.
