Can a Softer Mattress Stand Out in a Market Obsessed with Medium-Firm Mattresses? Silk & Snow Thinks So.
Silk & Snow launched with a single-firmness memory foam mattress in 2017. Selling in both the U.S. and Canada, the brand has been making efforts to gain traction in both countries, including recently updating the design and build of their foam mattress while the prices of raw materials soared.
Despite outward appearances, Silk & Snow’s signature foam mattress is a considerable departure from most bed-in-box brands in North America. While market leaders like Casper, Douglas, and Endy attempt to appeal to the largest demographic of sleepers with medium to medium-firm mattresses (each rated considerably firmer by our engineers than S&S), Silk & Snow caters to the mattress shopper who craves something softer.
In such a competitive market, it might take such a niche approach for Silk & Snow to build up the necessary following to catch up to their rivals. In fact, according to our test results, this latest version of the S&S Mattress has gotten even softer. This means that you are likely to sink even further down into the mattress, which may create difficulties with spinal alignment and overheating for certain individuals. But for others, this is exactly the type of comfort they are looking for.
Most sleepers are drawn to medium-firm mattresses for their widely agreeable balance of support and cushioning. Softer mattresses are generally preferred by lightweight sleepers and shoppers looking for a sleep surface with extra sinkage and ‘hug.’ While Silk & Snow may prove to be too plush and sink too much in the middle for many people, anyone who loves a soft and enveloping mattress should take a closer look at Silk & Snow.
At $800 CAD for a queen, the 10” Silk & Snow is priced similarly to more established Canadian-made foam mattresses like Douglas ($799 CAD) and Endy ($895 CAD).

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
Silk & Snow is available for purchase online and is delivered free of charge throughout most of the US and Canada. However, shipping fees do apply to some remote locations. The mattress arrives in a cardboard box that requires two people to move. Our S&S Mattress arrived six business days after we placed our order.
The Unboxing
The mattress is simple to unpack. Once out of the box, it needs to be removed from the protective plastic layers. The unwrapped mattress should fully expand within a few hours.
The Look
Like other online brands, Silk & Snow has opted for a simple two-tone design. The mattress cover has a patterned white knit top and a dark blue base. As part of their recent update, the S&S top cover has been redesigned to a simpler pattern.
The Feel
Silk & Snow has a noticeably softer feel than similar three-layer foam mattresses. The extra softness is likely attributed to the gel memory foam top layer. High-density memory foam is great for cushioning, which means there is often a higher degree of sinkage and hug from the sleep surface. If you like the feeling of sleeping ‘in’ your mattress, you may enjoy Silk & Snow.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate the Silk & Snow Mattress?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.

How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Silk & Snow |
---|---|
Firmness: | 3.7 / 10 |
Edge support: | 5.2 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 7.6 / 10 |
Bounce: | 2.9 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
At 3.7 / 10, Silk & Snow is considered a medium-soft mattress. The centre of the mattress has a fair amount of sinkage, giving the feeling that you are snuggly resting in the bed. Shoppers looking for a soft mattress that they can sink into may be interested in Silk & Snow.
Sleepers who weigh more than 150 lbs could find that they sink too deeply into this mattress. In addition to not getting enough support at the hips, back, or stomach, excess sinkage can result in a warmer sleep environment. When more of your body is encased in foam, heat can become trapped in the surface because the air cannot properly circulate away from the body. If you tend to overheat during the night, this mattress may not be ideal.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for having strong edge support. Weak edge support is often one of the main issues customers have when moving from traditional innerspring mattresses to foam. In this regard, Silk & Snow’s 5.2 / 10 rating is relatively consistent when compared to similar brands like Endy or Casper. A lack of stability at the sidewalls can cause problems for sleepers who struggle to get out of bed. People with limited mobility may want a mattress with better edge support.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation scores for foam mattresses are usually very good. Lower motion transfer is often one of the main reasons couples switch from innerspring to memory foam. At 7.6 / 10, Silk & Snow has a comparable motion isolation score to other foam mattresses in its category. If motion isolation is important to you, you may want to take a closer look at Douglas, which received Mattress-Reviews.com’s top motion isolation score for an all-foam mattress.
Bounce
Because foam mattresses are so great for motion isolation, the bounce rate is generally low. Silk & Snow scored 2.9 / 10 for bounce, which is typical for a thicker, medium-soft mattress with lots of hug.
Mattress Construction: What’s Silk & Snow Made Of?
Construction | Silk & Snow |
---|---|
Mattress height: | 10" |
Number of layers: | 3 |
Comfort layer: | 2” high-density gel memory foam |
Transition layer: | 2" transition foam |
Support layer: | 6″ support foam |
Cover materials: | Polyester, cotton |
Machine washable: | Yes |
Silk & Snow Mattress Layers
Silk & Snow contains three layers. The individual layers work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.
- First layer: 2 inches of high-density gel memory foam. This top layer aids in preventing pressure points while letting you sink into the mattress.
- Second layer: 2 inches of transition foam. This transition layer serves double duty by reinforcing the motion isolating qualities of the mattress and adding to the layer’s support properties below.
- Third layer: 6 inches of support foam. This bottom layer makes up the mattress’s foundation, providing the overall integrity of the bed and keeping you from sinking in too deep into the lower layers of the mattress.
Silk & Snow Mattress Cover
The top portion of the Silk & Snow cover can be unzipped, removed, and cleaned in the washing machine. Though the company's website does not list a fabric content breakdown, the law label on the mattress lists both polyester and cotton among the general contents of the mattress itself.
Silk & Snow promotes its antimicrobial mattress cover (materials undisclosed) which is said to help prevent the growth of many types of bacteria. This added feature may be of use to customers who do not plan on using a mattress protector; however, the company's return policy cites that all products must have no stains, soiling, or odours to be eligible for returns.

Final Thoughts on Silk & Snow
Silk & Snow ($650+) will appeal to many online shoppers, making it worthy of consideration alongside Canada’s market leaders, Endy ($675+) and Douglas ($599+).
The brand has a reasonable sleep trial and warranty, and Silk & Snow’s use of CertiPUR-US® foams will be comforting for shoppers wanting a safe and well-made mattress at a mid-market price point. As for its overall feel, Silk & Snow is best for shoppers who prefer a softer mattress with lots of hug.
If you’re looking to get the most value from your mattress, several brands offer similar (or better) features at a significantly lower price. But in the end, when it comes to comfort, it’s hard to put a price tag on the mattress that works best for your unique sleep needs.
