Sealy’s involvement in the mattress industry goes back to the 1880s, with the company taking its name from the Texas town where it first began producing made-to-order mattresses. The business grew rapidly and became an industry leader by the 1920s, contributing to many innovations and patents. The Posturepedic line was launched in the early 1950s, with an overall goal to “provide technology that delivers deep, targeted support right where you need it.” The large company also owns the other industry well-known mattress brand Stearns & Foster.
However, the Sealy Posturepedic line has seen significant competition in recent years from online mattress brands like Octave, innovative companies who ship directly to buyers and bypass the brick-and-mortar retail model.

The Sealy Posturepedic mattress will vary by retailer based on stock availability and delivery schedules, averaging between 3 to 10 days. The model used in this review – the Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress – was ordered at Sleep Country Canada and was delivered within the expected time frame.
Mattress retailers often use their own delivery service to deliver Sealy Posturepedic mattresses. The delivery is often ‘white glove,’ which means that the mattress is delivered to the room of your choice, placed on the surface of choice, the packaging is removed, and the old mattress is taken away.
Each mattress retailer who stocks and sells Sealy Posturepedic mattresses may or may not offer a sleep trial. Those who purchase a Sealy Posturepedic mattress in Canada may be offered a sleep trial window, a period of time to test the mattress at home and return or exchange it within an announced time frame. These policies, along with fee and warranty structures, are dependent on the retailer.
Mattress buyers in Canada who choose to purchase a Sealy Posturepedic mattress at a retail store may incur restocking fees for returned mattresses; again, this is dependent on the individual retailer’s terms and conditions.
Sealy Posturepedic Mattress: Out of the Box
The Sealy Posturepedic mattress is not delivered in a box. Depending on the retailer, white-glove delivery service is often included in the price of a Sealy Posturepedic mattress.

The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford is a combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Sealy has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
This mattress tested in this review, the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford, is available only in one firmness option and boasts a combination of materials to provide even support and a consistent temperature throughout the night.
Sealy Posturepedic Mattress Layers
The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress contains six layers of foam from its pillow top down to its bottom support tier. Like many of the combination foam mattresses on the market today, all layers in the Sealy Posturepedic mattress work together to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The top comfort layers of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress are a combined 4.5″ of OptiCool™ Gel Memory Foam. This collection of gel-infused foam is designed to remove excess heat while giving the mattress surface a bit of “hug.”
The middle transitions layers of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress are a combined 3.5″ of Optisense™ Memory Foam. These layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, reducing motion transfer, providing a stable sleep surface throughout the night.
The bottom layer of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress is 5″ of OptiCore™ support foam. This firmer support layer gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far.
Foam density details were not available through the Sealy or retailer websites.
Sealy Posturepedic Mattress Cover
The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford’s pillow-top cover is quilted and button tufted to emphasized its soft surface. The white polyester fabric is further decorated in a quatrefoil pattern throughout, a theme that continues down along the full border of the side walls. Two other highlights of this two-tone exterior are the decorative piping along the outer edges and two fabric handles on either side of the mattress, making it easier to move or rotate the piece. All in all, the cover has an elegant look which matches the theme of this stylish, luxury line.
According to the product tag, the mattress cover is a blend of fabrics: 100% polyester for the sleep surface, and a mix of 69% cotton and 31% polypropylene for the mattress border.
The pillow-top cover is neither removable nor machine washable. Therefore, the only option for cleaning this mattress is spot cleaning.

Feel & Firmness
The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford classifies as a medium-soft mattress. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it is rated at a 4.2 / 10 firmness. The Sealy Posturepedic mattress has a bit of ‘hug’ in the pillow top but is not excessively soft due to the transition and support layers beneath.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress performed above average for motion isolation, ranking at 6.1 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main issues customers have when moving from innerspring mattresses to foam mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress ranks below average for edge support at 3.9 / 10 on the edge support scale.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for memory foam mattresses is generally very good, bounce is generally very low. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress rated 4.2 / 10 for bounce, which is average for combination foam mattresses.

Who buys a Sealy Posturepedic mattress?
The Sealy Posturepedic line appeals to mattress buyers who still prefer to visit mattress stores in person and generally lean towards larger corporate brands. The Optimum Guilford model will attract the eye of those who want the benefits of memory foam but who like the traditional look of the pillow-top innerspring mattress. Those shopping for a mattress with a medium feel should consider Sealy Posturepedic in their search.
However, if you’re part of the majority of sleepers who prefer a medium-firm mattress, a medium-firm memory foam mattress like Octave may suit you better. The Octave mattress contains copper-infused memory foam for rapid heat dissipation, and its multi-zone support foam layer uses high-density foam for durability, motion isolation, and full-body pressure relief. At $899 for a queen, Octave provides mattress buyers with a top-quality product at a competitive price and a generous 365-night sleep trial.
Buy Sealy Posturepedic if you want:
- A long-established retail mattress brand
- To inspect the mattress in store
- A mattress with a medium-soft firmness
- The option of white glove delivery
