Purple Restore Hybrid: Does the Science Live Up To the Hype?
Purple is known for its flashy advertising and its signature polymer GelFlex® Grid. Purple Restore Hybrid is the company’s most “affordable” hybrid. But at $3,312 CAD ($2,399 USD) for a queen size, the cost will be a stumbling block for many shoppers.
This mattress uses Purple’s patented Grid layer and has an antimicrobial cover. It also comes in two firmness options: soft and firm. (Third-party engineer test results showed that the firm Purple Restore Hybrid actually falls into the medium-firm category, based on its score.) This mattress just doesn’t have enough features to make up for its high cost.
You will also have trouble ordering this mattress if you’re a Canadian shopper. Sleep Country Canada no longer carries Purple mattresses. Your only other option is to buy directly from the manufacturer, but Purple doesn’t ship to Canada.
The Purple Restore Hybrid has impressive science behind it. But that doesn’t count for much when the mattress has a high price tag, offers few features, and isn’t available in Canada. Competing mattresses like Octave Vista provide more value for less. For example, Vista offers advanced cooling features, zoned support, a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year mattress warranty, and a free bedding bundle. Octave Vista also costs far less at just $899 for a queen.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival & Unboxing
We purchased a Firm mattress directly from the Purple website. The mattress shipped through our US channels, an option that is not available to most Canadians. It took several weeks to arrive. Our original mattress order was lost in transit, although Purple replaced it free of charge.
Purple Restore Hybrid arrived in a deep purple plastic and canvas bag. The mattress was vacuum-sealed and sealed in plastic, which is typical for mattresses that are rolled up for delivery.
Even while rolled and sealed in a bag, the Purple Restore Hybrid was heavy and difficult to move—even for two people working together. The queen-size mattress we ordered weighs 114 pounds. This is one of the heaviest hybrid mattresses we have reviewed.
Although the Purple Restore Hybrid was much more difficult to move than expected, the mattress unrolled and expanded into its usable state without any problems.
The Look & Feel
Most of the Purple Restore Hybrid is a faded purple colour. The top cover is a very light grey and is quilted in a pattern of sweeping, alternating curves. The material in the sidewalls is quilted with a horizontally aligned diamond pattern. The company’s brand logo is very large and is located to one side at the foot of the mattress. The model name is on the opposite corner, also at the foot of the mattress.
When we tested the mattress, we found that the Purple Restore Hybrid is medium-firm—not what the “Firm” option suggests. The cover is slightly cool to the touch. The GelFlex® Grid creates a unique feel when lying down on the mattress. Some of our mattress experts said the mattress felt soft, while others could feel the grid beneath their bodies and found it uncomfortable.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate the Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Purple Restore Hybrid |
---|---|
Firmness: | 6.4 / 10 |
Edge support: | 9.5 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 7.5 / 10 |
Bounce: | 7.8 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
Testing showed that the “Firm” Purple Restore Hybrid isn’t as firm as advertised. According to testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Purple Restore Hybrid scored 6.4 / 10 for firmness, putting it in the medium-firm category.
Purple Restore Hybrid doesn’t have excessive “sink,” but you’ll feel the softness from the comfort layer while you’re lying down. You should be able to change sleep positions without much difficulty.
Edge Support
Thanks to their use of coils, hybrid mattresses generally have good edge support. Purple Restore Hybrid performs well in this area, much better than other Purple mattress models we’ve tested.
According to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Purple Restore earned an edge support score of 9.5 / 10. The GelFlex® Grid could be a contributing factor for this excellent score.
Motion Isolation
Hybrid mattresses tend to have reasonably good motion isolation. Even though coils tend to carry motion across the mattress, this effect is usually dampened by the foam layers.
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Purple Restore Hybrid scored 7.5 / 10. This is an above-average score for a hybrid. You may not notice your partner’s smaller movements while you sleep, but it’s possible larger movements will wake you up.
Bounce
Like other Purple mattress models, the Purple Restore Hybrid uses a hyper-elastic polymer as its top layer. This stretchy material is very responsive, meaning it reacts to pressure quickly. Unfortunately, the Purple Restore Hybrid does not limit bounce as well as other Purple models.
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Purple Restore Hybrid earned a 7.8 / 10 bounce rating, which is high for a hybrid mattress. You will be able to change positions easily but may find this mattress too responsive to allow for a restful sleep.

Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress Layers
The 11.5″ Purple Restore Hybrid mattress is available in soft and firm options. (However, “firm” actually has a medium-firm feel.) Both firmness options are made with three distinct layers. One layer contains a polymer grid encased in foam along the sidewalls, the second is a foam layer, and the last contains pocketed coils.
- First layer: The top layer of Purple Restore Hybrid is a 2″-thick polymer grid, which is encased with edge support foam along the sidewalls. This grid is Purple’s signature GelFlex® Grid, which is designed for comfort, support, and breathability.
- Second layer: The second layer contains 1.5″ of polyurethane foam, designed to conform to your body’s shape while you lie on the mattress.
- Third layer: Purple Restore Hybrid’s support layer consists of 8″ coils. These coils are individually pocketed to assist with motion isolation.
Purple does not disclose the densities of the foams used in the Purple Restore Hybrid. Company information emphasizes that no memory foam is used in the mattress’s construction.
Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress Cover
Purple Restore Hybrid’s SoftFlex mattress cover is designed to be breathable and anti-microbial. It is made from polyester, elastic, and rayon. The cover also includes an unidentified core/sheath yarn (a type of synthetic yarn made from weaving two or more types of polyester together). Purple does not disclose the specific component fibers in the core/sheath yarn.
The mattress cover on Purple Restore Hybrid has a zipper, but the company emphasizes that the cover should not be removed. It is not machine-washable. Removing the mattress cover for any reason may void the mattress’s warranty.
The mattress cover has a warranty separate from the rest of the mattress. This cover’s warranty period is just two years and covers manufacturing defects only.

Purple is a publicly traded mattress manufacturer based in Utah. The company was founded in 2015 by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, but before then, the dream wasn’t necessarily mattresses. It started in the 1990s with wheelchair cushions, then footwear, knee pads, and more.
It was 1996 when the Pearce brothers first created their hyper-elastic polymer. It took another 17 years before they began to construct mattresses with their polymer. In 2017, they merged with Global Partner Acquisition Corp and together have continued to build the Purple brand.

Note: Because Sleep Country didn’t have a mattress in the correct size for testing, we ordered a Purple Restore Hybrid from the manufacturer and had it delivered using our own shipping methods. This shipping option is unavailable to most Canadians, as the mattress manufacturer does not ship internationally.
Purple offers free ground shipping in the contiguous United States through FedEx. There is an extra charge to ship to customers in Alaska and Hawaii, which is calculated at checkout. The Purple website displays inconsistent information about order process and delivery timelines. It will take either 1–2 or 3–5 business days for your order to ship, and another 3–5 or 5–10 business days to arrive. Purple also offers in-home setup, with or without mattress removal.
You have a 100-night sleep trial for you to try the mattress at home. If you decide to return the mattress, the company will arrange for return pickup and give you a full refund.
Purple offers a standard 10-year limited manufacturer’s warranty for Purple Restore Hybrid. This warranty covers manufacturing defects only. The mattress cover has a separate warranty which is just 2 years long, and also covers manufacturing defects only. Purple warns that removing the mattress cover for any reason may void the mattress’s warranty.

Final Thoughts on Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress
Purple has had considerable success with its brand, thanks to its research and development. But the science doesn’t matter if it doesn’t give you the value you need.
The Purple Restore Hybrid’s patented technology comes at the cost of other features. Not only does it lack basic features like a machine-washable cover, but its sleep trial and warranty are just average. This mattress also doesn’t offer cooling and comfort features. We expect more value for the high cost of $3,312 CAD for a queen size.
If you’re looking for a high-quality mattress that keeps you cool and comfortable, we recommend Octave Vista. This mattress (which is our top pick for Best Cooling Mattress) comes with:
- Advanced cooling features like copper-infused gel memory foam, advanced phase-change material, and multi-zone support with air channels
- Zoned support beneath your back and hips for a more comfortable, supportive sleep
- Pressure-point relief to soothe away the day’s aches and pains
- Less bounce than the Purple Restore Hybrid for a more consistent sleep surface
- Machine-washable top cover with cooling nanofibres, making it easy to clean and keep the sleep surface fresh
- Risk-free 365-night sleep trial with free return pickup and full refund (265 nights longer than Sleep Country’s 100-night exchange-only period)
- 15-year warranty to protect your mattress (five years longer than Purple’s 10-year warranty)
- Free bedding bundle with your purchase, including a mattress protector, pillows, pillow protectors, and sheets
At just $899 for a queen size, Octave Vista provides far more value in a mattress at a fraction of the cost.
