Considering Its High Cost, Poor Reviews, and No Refunds, Is the Purple Plus Mattress Really Worth It?
The Purple brand has attracted plenty of attention from mattress shoppers, with captivating television ads showcasing its futuristic-looking Purple GelFlex® Grid. With all its publicity, it might surprise you to see that the Purple Plus only earned an overall rating of 3.6 out of 10 here on Mattress-Reviews.com.
So how did it score so low? Mostly because of value. As you’ll see in this review, the Purple Plus doesn’t deliver many incremental benefits that mattresses one-third of its cost can offer.
The Purple Plus is the least expensive model that Purple offers in Canada but sells for a staggering $3,349 CAD for a queen-size mattress. That’s nearly twice the price of the Purple Plus mattress sold in the USA, which costs $1,899 USD. There are also two more mattresses offered in the USA that are less expensive than the Purple Plus, but not in Canada. Bed-in-a-box companies typically get to offer low prices because of their direct-to-consumer business model. However, the Purple Plus mattress has the same high-cost in-store at shops like Sleep Country as it does online.
Most online mattress shoppers look for a generous sleep trial and a simple return process. Unfortunately, this is an expectation Purple fails to live up to. Purple does not offer refunds on opened products. The only option for customers who aren’t happy with their Purple mattress is to exchange it for other Purple products within the first 100 nights. And remember, this is the least expensive mattress Purple offers, so you might end up spending even more money on a mattress upgrade during your exchange instead of getting your money back.
This is a far cry from other online mattress companies like Douglas, which offers a full 365 nights to try out your new mattress, full money-back refunds, and only costs $799 CAD for a queen. If you’re on the fence about purchasing a particular mattress, it would be best to make sure you can get your money back if you aren’t completely satisfied, especially if it’s going to be as much as the Purple Plus at $3,349 CAD.
Mattress-Reviews.com takes the opinions of past customers into serious consideration. This is yet another area where Purple hasn’t been particularly successful. At the time of publishing this article, the Purple Plus mattress only has nine customer reviews on its Canadian website. In addition, customers have voiced concerns on public review sites, earning Purple a “poor” rating on Trustpilot.com. Aside from customer reviews, we’ve also conducted testing from third-party engineers to give you a detailed look at the Purple Plus mattress, which you can view just below.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
The Purple Plus mattress is available for purchase online and at Sleep Country. It’s delivered to most of the United States and Canada for free, with the exception of a few remote areas that require an additional charge. Purple has differentiated itself from other online mattress companies by delivering mattresses in a weather-resistant bag instead of recyclable cardboard.
The Unboxing
The bag the Purple Plus arrives in is simple to unpack. Unzipping one side of the bag and sliding the compressed mattress out takes only a few moments. You’ll have to remove the mattress’ protective plastic cover and it will begin to decompress. The bag includes handles that make hauling it to the bedroom less of a chore.
The Look
Depending if you’re in Canada or the United States, the Purple Plus mattress cover design might look a little different. We reviewed the Canadian version, which has a white top and a series of grey waves decorating the sidewalls.
The Feel
Purple uses a hyper-elastic polymer (called the Purple GelFlex® Grid) for the top layer of its mattresses. This polymer has a rubbery texture and is incredibly flexible. It’s made from a series of columns that intentionally buckle under pressure to distribute pressure across the mattress. The Purple GelFlex® Grid, paired with only a 4-inch base layer, makes the Purple Plus mattress one of the softest mattresses featured on Mattress-Reviews.com.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate the Purple Plus Mattress?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Purple Plus |
---|---|
Firmness: | 2.9 / 10 |
Edge support: | 2.3 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 6.7 / 10 |
Bounce: | 4.2 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
There are soft mattresses, and then there’s the Purple Plus mattress. In the third-party engineered testing we commissioned, the Purple Plus scored only 2.9/10 for firmness. This is one of the lowest firmness scores we’ve ever recorded. This means that the same standardized weight used to test firmness sunk deeper into the surface of the Purple Plus than almost all of the 110+ mattresses we’ve reviewed. While you may be looking for a softer mattress, perhaps for pressure point relief, you’ll still want to find something with some support to promote healthy spine alignment.
You might find yourself sinking deeper into the Purple Plus than you’d like to if you weigh over 150 lbs. If that’s the case, you may want to look into firmer alternatives such as Douglas or Juno. Both of these mattresses outscored the Purple Plus on our list of Best Mattresses and cost thousands of dollars less.
Edge Support
The Purple Plus’ top layer is a polymer grid stretched across the full area of the mattress. Unfortunately, this construction offers very little edge support. As recorded by the third-party engineered testing we commissioned, the Purple Plus only received 2.3/10 in this category. Because the walls of this grid are designed to buckle under pressure and deflect weight instantly, it doesn’t feel like there’s much support until you’ve sunk enough to hit the bottom layers of the mattress (which you can see in the picture above).
Solid edge support provides a stable base for those who like to sit on the side of the bed. It also lessens the amount of effort required to transition from lying down to sitting and standing. Mattress shoppers with hip or joint pain may have a difficult time getting up from a lower position caused by poor edge support.
Motion Isolation
If there’s one thing a soft mattress like the Purple Plus can offer you, it’s great motion isolation. Its stretchy, elastic surface absorbs impact and movement considerably well, earning the Purple Plus a motion isolation score of 6.7/10. If you’re a light sleeper looking to feel less movement from your partner throughout the night, this is definitely a feature to remember.
Bounce
We’ve mentioned that the Purple Plus mattress uses hyper-elastic polymer as its top layer. This stretchy material is very responsive, meaning it reacts to pressure quickly. It absorbs any weight thrown at it in an instant and returns to its original shape just as fast. This can produce the appearance of a bouncy mattress, but the Purple Plus really does a decent job of limiting bounce.
For the bounce test, the Purple Plus mattress tallied a score of 4.2/10. While this means the mattress will dampen some motion, it also means you might find it more difficult to shift your body position at night, as you’ll likely sink in a fair amount as you prop yourself up.

Purple Plus Mattress Layers
The Purple Plus may look like a typical mattress on the outside, but taking a look underneath the mattress cover reveals some pretty distinctive construction.
- First layer: 2 inches of hyper-elastic polymer. This unique layer is a grid of open columns that easily collapse under pressure but quickly return to their original shape.
- Second layer: 2 inches of polyurethane foam. This foam is faster at responding to pressure than most foams and is part of the reason why the mattress sinks in as much as it does.
- Third layer: 3 inches of polyurethane foam. This layer is designed to provide some much-needed support beneath the top two layers and adds some stability to the mattress.
- Fourth layer: 4 more inches of polyurethane foam. This bottom layer is unique to Purple as most mattresses use at least 6 inches of rigid, high-density support foam to provide a durable base.
NOTE: Unlike many mattresses at its price point, the Purple Plus does not have perimeter edge support, or zoned support. This means there will be more sinkage along the sidewalls of the mattress, as observed in our third-party testing. It also means that the centre third of the bed, where most of the body weight resides, is likely to wear down at a faster rate than either end of the bed. This could form a divot over time, resulting in discomfort. Please consult Purple’s warranty information to ensure you are using a proper base to maximize the lifespan of the Purple Plus mattress.
Purple Plus Mattress Cover
The Purple Plus mattress has a dimpled cover that’s soft to the touch. It’s made with spandex, acrylic latex, polyurethane, and polyester. The design includes a series of grey waves adorning the sidewalls. It has a clean white top, but it may be a chore to keep it that way. The mattress cover is unable to be removed or machine washed. It must be spot-treated only, should any spills or stains come about.
If you’d like to prevent stains from reaching the mattress cover you could use a Purple mattress protector but it will cost you another $269 CAD for a queen size. Mattress protectors have become an essential part of improving the life span of your mattress. That’s why companies like Douglas now offer mattress protectors for free with every mattress purchase, something that Purple could learn from.

Purple is a publicly traded mattress manufacturer based in Tooele, Utah. The company was founded in 2015 by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, but before then, the dream wasn’t necessarily mattresses.
It started in the 1990s with wheelchair cushions, then footwear, knee pads, and more. It was 1996 when the Pearce brothers first created their hyper-elastic polymer and it would be another 17 years before they began to construct mattresses with it. In 2015, they merged with Global Partner Acquisition Corp. and together have continued to build the Purple brand.

Purple offers free delivery to most of the United States and Canada on orders that cost $75 or more. For remote areas like Canada’s territories or Newfoundland & Labrador, there is a shipping surcharge of $120. Purple’s standard delivery services will give you a three-hour delivery window and a no-contact delivery option.
For an additional fee, Purple will provide you with Green Glove delivery. This means that Purple will assemble your new mattress in the room of your choosing and take up to three pieces of your old bed set away to be recycled or thrown out.
Purple’s return policy (or lack thereof) is probably its biggest setback. Purple does not offer money-back refunds. If you’re unsatisfied with the Purple Plus mattress, you’ll be restricted to the terms of Purple’s “Comfort Guarantee.” This is a 100-night sleep trial that specifies you will only be allowed to exchange your purchase for more Purple products.
Keep in mind that the Purple Plus is the least expensive mattress that Purple offers in Canada. That means if you’re not happy with your Purple Plus mattress, you’ll either have to spend even more money on a mattress upgrade or you’ll be exchanging your mattress for $3,300 worth of sleep accessories. If you purchased the mattress from Sleep Country, you will also need to pay a $65 exchange fee.

Final Thoughts on Purple Plus
While Purple has made a splash in the mattress industry with its unique GelFlex® Grid and eye-catching commercials, it appears to have fallen short in areas that really matter to consumers. The Purple Plus mattress scored low in third-party engineered testing that we commissioned regarding features that most sleep-seekers value such as edge support. These test scores also indicated that the Purple Plus might be far softer than some shoppers might expect.
By not offering money-back refunds on such an expensive product ($3,349 CAD for a queen-size mattress) the Purple Plus has lost favour on public review sites like Trustpilot.com, where it received a “poor” rating. If you’re looking for a mattress that outperformed the Purple Plus in engineered testing and will save you literally thousands of dollars, look no further than the Douglas mattress.
