As expected, the copper-infused memory foam is the key feature in the Layla mattress. They simply add copper flakes when pouring and creating the foam. The Layla mattress was launched in 2015, marking the American online retailer’s entrance into the bed-in-a-box mattress space.

With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, memory foam mattresses are now shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than mattresses purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers are no longer required to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Layla uses the specialist logistics company UPS to deliver the Layla mattress directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Shipping is subject to a $125 fee (USD) for the majority of Canadians, and Layla customers can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 10 business days of purchase.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Layla heavily promotes their Layla Mattress ‘sleep-trial.’ At 120 nights, this sleep trial ranks among the longest in the industry. Should you choose to return the mattress, Layla offers a list of local charities who offer haul-away services to come retrieve the mattress free of charge. Upon emailing Layla a copy of the charity pick-up receipt, Layla will initiate a full refund to the payment method used to make the initial purchase.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information via the ‘Live Chat’ function on the Layla retail website.

The Layla mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time, with some minor discoloration to the box. This is normal of mattresses in boxes and is why specialist bed-in-a-box retailers include multiple layers of durable plastic protection to compensate for any mishaps during the transit process.
The Layla mattress box was sealed well with heavy-duty tape. Customers should be able to open without scissors, but they might be useful. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects. It is also worth noting that the Layla mattress box does have plastic handles, which make moving the box a little easier.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the bedroom where the mattress will be used.
The Layla mattress is protected with five layers of heavy-duty plastic, and customers will need to unwrap the first four layers of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress onto the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer of plastic, pull it loose, and use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to remove the remaining packaging. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The Layla mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height soon enough. With the Layla mattress, full expansion took 3 minutes.

Layla is a 10” tall, copper-infused memory foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Layla has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
The Layla mattress is a flippable mattress available in two firmness options: firm and soft.
Layla Mattress Layers
The Layla mattress contains four layers of foam. Like many of the memory foam mattresses on the market today, each layer of foam in the Layla mattress works with the others to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The outer layer on either side of the Layla mattress was created to provide an optimal level of comfort and cooling. Infused with copper, these layers help regulate body temperature. Layla has used this material within their mattresses to alleviate one of the major drawbacks of foam: ‘sleeping hot.’ The soft layer comes in at a 3.5 lbs/ft3 density, while the firm layer shown at the top of the image above is just 1” thick but still provides rapid heat transfer, compression support, and antimicrobial properties.
The second and thickest layer is a 4.5” tier designed to provide core support at a density of 2 lbs/ft3.
The third layer of the Layla mattress is 2 inches of convoluted support foam. This 1.8 lbs/ft3 foam was designed to maximize air flow and breathability.
Layla Mattress Cover
The Layla mattress has a unique cover design patterned with three-dimensional cubes, stretching across the top surface and extending midway down the side walls. It’s like sleeping on a portrait by M.C Escher, the artist best known for his optical illusions. The white and light grey accents are presented through the use of the zipper, which connects the washable top cover to the base fabric.
When in need of cleaning, the top cover can be zipped off from the base unit and taken to the dry cleaners. One limitation we found with the zipper location for the top cover was that the zipper does not always stay flush on the upper edge of the mattress, especially if a sleeper moves around a lot during the night. Customers who require perfect aesthetics may find this frustrating.
The Layla mattress top cover is quite the composition. Their support staff note that it contains 66% polyester, 30% viscose, 4% poly/lycra, and is woven with the registered Thermogel® cooling agent for added comfort.
Layla Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Feel & Firmness
The Layla mattress is both a medium and medium-soft mattress, depending on which way the foam layers are arranged. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), its firm side comes in at a 6.1 / 10 on the firmness scale while the soft option rates 4.3 / 10. The Layla mattress does not have excessive ‘hug,’ and the comfort layer gives it a degree of softness as you lie down. Its layers of supportive foam ensure there is no excessive sinkage.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), minimal motion transfer was detected with the Layla mattress: it ranked right around 6.5/10 on the motion isolation scale whether you slept on either the firmer or softer side.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main inquiries for mattress retailers from customers who move from innerspring mattresses to foam mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the firm option ranked 5 / 10 on the edge support scale. The soft option, on the other hand, performed poorly in terms of edge support with a rating of 1.3 / 10.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is very high, bounce is usually very low. The firmer side of the Layla mattress had a higher rating for bounce than other foam mattresses, likely thanks to the support layer being closer to the surface. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Layla mattress ranked 3.7 / 10 on the bounce scale. The soft option, in contrast, ranked 2.0 / 10.

Who buys a Layla mattress?
Layla touts their copper-infused memory foam mattress as one that provides a cooler, more supportive sleep. Those looking for a mattress with two firmness options (soft, medium-firm) with adequate support could consider the Layla mattress. However, the Layla mattress comes at a steep cost of $1,099 USD for queen and doesn’t come with free shipping.
Shoppers can find Canadian-made options that offer just as many, if not more, cooling features at a more affordable cost. Octave, for instance, is a top-rated cooling mattress that’s packed with advanced cooling features such as a cooling nanofibre cover, CopperGel™ memory foam infused with phase-change material to balance body temperature, and multi-zone support foam with built-in air channels for better air circulation.
Each Octave mattress is also made in Canada, comes with a 365-nigth sleep trial, and the company offers free shipping to most regions in Canada. This engineered cooling mattress comes at a competitive price of $899 CAD for a queen.
