Although to many North American shoppers IKEA may look and feel like a relatively modern business, the Swedish company actually got its start as a mail order company in 1943. Less than a decade later, in the 1950s, the company was already orienting itself towards furniture and self-assembly. By the ’60s, IKEA was opening new stores and developing its own products. When the ’80s rolled around, IKEA was expanding its reach in Europe.

Alongside its increasing market growth, the company expanded its offerings to include kitchen equipment, child and family-oriented decor, and, eventually, bedroom furnishings that include a small collection of spring and foam mattresses.

Today, the company has continued to expand both its catalogue and its reputation with buyers as a budget-friendly home decor and furnishings company.

IKEA uses FedEx and a variety of shipping partners to deliver directly to customers’ doors throughout most of Canada. There is a shipping fee that’s calculated based on your postal code. IKEA customers should also expect to pay for both Express Delivery and Click and Collect services although finding and picking up items in-store can be done at no cost. IKEA customers can expect their new mattress to arrive within 1 to 5 business days.

Unopened mattresses in new and unused condition can be returned within 365 days with proof of purchase. For shoppers who use their IKEA mattresses, they can exchange their mattresses once in a 90-day period. If a more expensive mattress is chosen, customers are expected to pay the price difference. Customers who choose a cheaper mattress will receive store credit for the difference that can be put towards future IKEA purchases.

Because we chose to pick up the IKEA spring mattress in-store, there was no waiting during the delivery period and there was no damage to the packaging. 

The mattress came to us compressed in a plastic wrapper that was sealed with Velcro straps. It is worth noting that this arrangement made it easier to maneuver the mattress in its compressed form.

Customers will likely need scissors or a knife to open this plastic outer layer. To avoid potentially harming your new mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects. 

The IKEA Haugesund is protected with one thick outer layer of plastic that compresses the mattress into a vacuum seal that also keeps it tightly rolled in a cylinder shape. 

Customers will need to undo the Velcro straps and unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the mattress bundle onto the designated bed frame. After completing this process, the mattress will be lying unrolled before you.

Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. With the IKEA Haugesund spring mattress, full expansion took around three minutes although it’s recommended that customers wait roughly 72 hours before sleeping on it.

The IKEA Haugesund is a hybrid mattress. By combining foam and springs, this mattress aims to deliver a reasonable combination of comfort, cooling, and support.

The IKEA Haugesund is available in two firmness options: medium-firm and firm. 

IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress Layers

The IKEA Haugesund contains three stacked layers of spring and foam. These materials are designed to work together to provide a balance of support and comfort.

• First layer: 0.75 inches of polyurethane comfort foam. This top layer is what’s responsible for the cushioning and softness you experience when you lie down on the mattress. Foam density: 1.5 lbs/ft³.

• Second layer: 7 inches of pocketed coil springs. This layer provides the support and bounce that characterizes this mattress.

• Third layer: 0.75 inches of polyurethane support foam. This bottom layer acts as a foundation beneath the pocketed springs to help distribute body weight. Foam density: 1.7 lbs/ft³.

Of note: The innerspring layer is surrounded by a 3-inch-thick foam sidewall that runs the entire perimeter of the mattress. This exterior layer helps to establish the overall structure and edge support of the mattress. The top cover also has a sewn-in soft fill that helps account for the remaining half-inch of the mattress.

IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress Cover

The IKEA Haugesund spring mattress sports a dual-tone cover. On the very top, the cover is white with multiple sets of stitched lines running parallel to each other. The side walls of the mattress are brown with visible white stitching forming a repeating square pattern that makes the mattress easier to recognize. The top cover is made from a blend of polyester (54%) and cotton (46%). While some mattress covers can be removed and washed, the IKEA Haugesund’s top cover is spot-clean only and cannot be freshened up in the washing machine.

The IKEA Haugesund is priced very competitively, which gives it special appeal to university students, bargain hunters, and other buyers who are primarily concerned with price.

Even so, the Haugesund does have a few drawbacks compared with its competitors in the value mattress segment. For starters, the lack of Twin XL and California King sizes mean that buyers have less sizing options to choose from and don’t have the ability to use the Haugesund in a split-king adjustable bed setup. Secondly, some online buyers may find that the shipping fees negate the initial cost savings the mattress presents.
