Will GhostBed’s Negative Consumer Reviews and High Prices Scare Mattress Shoppers Away?
Despite seemingly good reviews on Ghostbed’s website, poor experiences raised by customers on Consumer Affairs, TrustPilot, Better Business Bureau, and CBC’s Go Public raise serious concerns.
For example, take a look at the following October 2023 BBB Complaint 20714912:
In essence, what they’re saying to the customer publicly, is that after returning the mattress, the customer will owe Ghostbed more money than they paid to purchase the mattress, because the customer must pay for the discounts that were applied to the order.
It’s important to note that there are reputable online mattress companies, like Douglas from Goodmorning.com, who stand behind their risk-free guarantee and offer a full refund if a customer doesn’t love their mattress for whatever reason, as do the majority of companies whose mattresses we review on Mattress Reviews.
Product Features
When it comes to features, GhostBed Classic has the ingredients of a good mattress. Perforated latex and gel foam layers promise a cool sleep, and a 20-year warranty offers the assurance that the mattress will last many years.
If you’re one of the roughly 39% of mattress shoppers open to purchasing a latex mattress, GhostBed Classic may be worth considering.
However, this mattress’s relatively high regular price ($1,695 CAD for a queen) might keep it outside the budget of many shoppers, even though it avoids tariffs by manufacturing in Canada.
If you want a premium cooling gel foam mattress with advanced features and is from a brand Canadian owned and operated, we recommend Douglas ($799).

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
GhostBed Classic can be purchased online from the GhostBed website. Versions of GhostBed mattresses might also be available at retailers like Home Depot, Hudson’s Bay, and Loblaws.
Shipping is free for all Canadian and American addresses. The mattress usually ships within 24 hours and arrives within 2–5 business days.
The Unboxing
Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, GhostBed Classic is simple to unpack. Once unboxed, the mattress expands to 11 inches in height within a few hours. Although GhostBed customer service says the mattress corners may take 24–48 hours to fully decompress.
The Look
GhostBed Classic features a slate grey fabric sidewall, with light grey stitching in diamond patterns. The GhostBed brand logo is attached to the bottom right corner at the foot of the mattress. The top cover is entirely white, with slightly raised circles for texture. (Consider buying their mattress protector for $159 CAD because the top cover is not machine washable.)
The Feel
Sleepers who like mattresses with a moderate amount of cushioning and ‘hug’ while still feeling supported will feel comfortable on GhostBed Classic. (For more details, see the next section for testing conducted by third-party engineers.)
When you lie down on GhostBed Classic, the aerated latex and gel foam layers work together to provide some cooling, as well as a bit of bounce to help with shifting into a different sleeping position.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate GhostBed Classic?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | GhostBed Classic |
---|---|
Firmness: | 7.7 / 10 |
Edge support: | 9.0 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 5.2 / 10 |
Bounce: | 4.6 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
The GhostBed Classic mattress is considered a firm mattress. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it comes in at 7.7 / 10 on the firmness spectrum.
With its moderate amount of sinkage, GhostBed Classic should feel comfortable to a wide range of body types and sleeping positions.
It’s worth noting, however, that side-sleepers or individuals who weigh less than 150 lbs may experience pressure points on their hips and shoulders on a firm mattress, and may instead prefer a medium-firm mattress that offers gentle contouring.
Edge Support
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), GhostBed Classic’s edge-support rating is 9.0 / 10. This is an excellent score for an all-foam mattress. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses, due to the structural rigidity of a spring or pocketed coil layer, tend to have the highest edge-support ratings.
A low edge-support rating could mean that owners will feel like they’re sinking into the foam when they are sitting on the side of the bed, making it harder to get out of bed compared to a mattress with a reinforced support layer.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to all-foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), GhostBed Classic scored 5.2 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
This score is slightly below average for all-foam mattresses tested on this site. Owners can expect movement transfer and vibration to be only somewhat muted on GhostBed Classic.
Bounce
Because foam mattresses tend to provide good motion isolation, that usually translates to a lower bounce rating compared to innerspring and hybrid mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), GhostBed Classic’s bounce score is 4.6 / 10.
This is an above-average rating for an all-foam mattress, potentially due to its latex foam layer (which GhostBed says provides ‘a nice springy, feel’). This means that on GhostBed Classic, when paired with its lower motion isolation score, owners may experience more movement coming from a partner.

GhostBed Classic Mattress Layers
GhostBed Classic contains three layers of foam and latex. Like other combination foam mattresses, the layers of GhostBed Classic work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.
- First layer: 1.5 inches of aerated latex foam. This top layer provides immediate cushioning as you lie down. Small holes in the foam should help warm air escape the sleep surface, providing a cooler sleep. This layer also contains latex, which can feel bouncier compared to conventional foam. However, our engineer results above suggest it has an average level of bounce. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 2 inches of cooling gel foam. This bright-blue-coloured transition foam provides an overall balance between the top and bottom layers. Since it is made of cooling gel, this layer can also help transfer heat away from the body. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Third layer: 7.5 inches of high-density base foam. This support layer helps give the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. It also provides a final layer of firmness for proper spinal alignment. Layer density: Unspecified.
Of note: Foam density or origin information for GhostBed Classic is not publicly available.
GhostBed Classic Mattress Cover
The GhostBed Classic mattress has a white-coloured cover with raised circular stitching for added texture. Fabric is a viscose and polyester blend, which feels soft and should offer good breathability.
The top cover on GhostBed Classic is NOT machine washable and cannot be removed. To spot-clean spills or stains, GhostBed recommends scrubbing with a mild detergent and cold water only.

Final Thoughts on GhostBed Classic
With an overall rating of 6.9, GhostBed scores a little above average. But there are three aspects to GhostBed Classic that keep it below our top made-in-Canada mattresses. First is their well publicized customer complaints.
Second is cost: At $1,695 CAD (for a queen), GhostBed Classic’s regular price is much higher than many competitors, many of whom come in under the $1,500 mark. Third is foam quality: This mattress does not include a layer of high-density memory foam, which in general is more durable and longer lasting than conventional foam.
For a top-rated cooling mattress that checks all the boxes, we recommend Octave. Or if you want to save and get Mattress Reviews’ Top Pick for Best Mattress 2024, checkout Douglas.
