Overall Rating
The Fleep mattress attempts to solve a common issue in the bed-in-a-box space: “What if I choose the wrong firmness?” In doing so, Fleep competes directly with other online brands like Casper and Octave for customers who enjoy the convenience of shopping online. The Fleep mattress is made in Canada, retails at $915 CAD for a queen, and can be returned for a full refund.

Fleep introduced their 2-in-1 comfort mattress in 2014, marking the latest Canadian innovation in the bed-in-a-box mattress space. According to the company, the dual-sided mattress is set at two desirable firmness levels “which together satisfy over 95% of the population.” Fleep joins a growing list of bed-in-a-box brands in Eastern Canada. Alongside competitors like Polysleep, Fleep has seen success serving the French-Canadian market in Quebec.
Though the Fleep website advertises its innovative mattress as “the first reversible mattress with 2 comfort levels sold exclusively online,” this feature is also offered by the Layla mattress (est. 2015, USA); the Layla offers the same flippable function, though it skews to the softer end of the spectrum.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Fleep uses UPS to deliver the Fleep mattress directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada and the United States. In some cases, the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Shipping is free for the majority of Canadians, and Fleep customers can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 3 to 5 business days.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Fleep heavily promotes their mattress sleep trial. At 111 nights, this trial is average in length. The company offers free mattress pick-up and a full refund when returned.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information via the ‘FAQ’ page on Fleep’s website.

The Fleep mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time. The mattress was well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the box to protect the mattress during shipping.
Due to the damage, the Fleep mattress box arrived poorly sealed despite the reinforced fibre tape. Customers should not require scissors or a knife to open the box. It is also worth noting that the Fleep mattress box has handles, which make it a bit easier to move.
Once opened the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Fleep mattress is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic – an inner layer to keep it compressed in a vacuum seal, and an outer layers to keep the mattress tightly rolled in a cylinder shape.
Customers will need to unwrap the outer layers in order to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled up mattress onto the designated bed frame. Next, use the included plastic cutter to slice the other layer of plastic. After completing this process, the mattress will be lying unrolled before you.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. With the Fleep mattress, full expansion took 6 minutes.

Fleep is a combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Fleep has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
The Fleep mattress is available only in one double-sided firmness configuration, with Fleep somewhat deviating from the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach often used by bed-in-a-box companies.
Fleep Mattress Layers
The Fleep mattress contains four layers of foam. Like many of the combination foam mattresses on the market today, all layers of foam in the Fleep mattress works together to provide an overall level of comfort and support. Flipping over the mattress changes the comfort level.
Important: This ordering represents the softer configuration. The order of these layers are reversed for the firmer comfort level.
- First layer: 2 inches of aerated instant response foam. This provides an optimal level of comfort and contouring for those seeking a softer mattress. The top layer helps regulate body temperature, helping to alleviate one of the major drawbacks of foam: ‘sleeping hot.’
- Second layer: 2 inches of therapeutic foam. This helps prevent sinkage and provides firm comfort, so you feel like you are sleeping on top of the mattress rather than being hugged by it.
- Third layer: 4 inches of dense base foam. This layer is softer and thicker, helping the firm side of the mattress conform to the body and provide support.
- Fourth layer: 2 inches of perforated gel-infused memory foam. This provides an optimal level of comfort for those seeking a firmer mattress, while also helping to regulate body temperature.
Unfortunately, the foam density information for the support and transition layers is not publicly listed. The comfort layers are between 4.0 lbs/ft3 and 4.5 lbs/ft3.
Mattress-Reviews.com was unable to contact the Fleep customer service representatives to obtain the densities of the two middle layers. This information is commonly hidden if the foams are a lower density than some other bed-in-a-box retailers who use higher-density foams like Octave. Higher-density foams generally have a longer life expectancy than their lower-density counterparts.
Fleep Mattress Cover
The Fleep mattress has a basic cover design divided along the horizontal axis by striking yellow zipper. Embossed on each half of the cover are “+” and “-” signs, indicating the locations of the firm and soft sides, respectively.
Though removable, the top cover it is not machine washable. This could be problematic for anyone who chooses not to use a mattress protector, or if the mattress is not properly protected while moving.
We did not find any mention of organic or natural materials being used in the cover on the website or in the fabric content breakdown on the law label.
Fleep Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Feel & Firmness
The Fleep mattress is dual-sided, with one side softer than the other. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the firmer side of the Fleep mattress is rated at a 7.6 / 10 on the firmness scale, and the soft side is rated at a 5.2 / 10. The Fleep mattress does not have much ‘hug,’ and the comfort layer gives it a degree of softness as you lie down; however, the feel changes dramatically once you have fully compressed the comfort foams. Its layers of supportive foam ensure there is no excessive sinkage. This is normal for medium and firm mattress.

Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main considerations for mattress shoppers contemplating the move from innerspring mattresses to foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Fleep mattress lacked significant edge support. It ranked 5.7 / 10 (firm) and 4.4 / 10 (soft) on the edge support scale.
Firm
Soft
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), minimal motion transfer was detected with the Fleep mattress; it ranked 6.9 / 10 (on both sides) on the motion isolation scale.
Firm
Soft
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is very high, bounce is usually very low. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Fleep mattress is rated at a 5.5 /10 (firm) and a 3.2 / 10 (soft) on the bounce. These relatively high ratings are likely due to the thinness of the comfort layers.

Who buys a Fleep mattress?
Fleep says the two firmness options selected for their mattress satisfy 95% of Canadians. But customers seeking a soft or medium-soft firmness will likely find the foams far too firm for their needs. Before buying a Fleep mattress, a firmness-sensitive shopper could test an option better suited for them.
Buy Fleep if you want:
- A mattress you can flip
- A firmer sleep surface
- To support a French-Canadian company
