Emma CliMax Hybrid: A Firm Mattress with a High Price
This particular model is no longer available in Canada.
In Europe, Emma established itself as a well-known mattress brand and soon expanded into the North American market. If the Emma CliMax Hybrid has caught your interest, here’s what you need to consider before buying.
Though Emma claims this mattress is medium-firm, third-party engineer testing commissioned by us says otherwise. Having earned a 7.8/10 for firmness, the CliMax Hybrid is firmer than advertised, which may feel too hard for some to sleep comfortably. You might want to consider other options if you are a lightweight individual or a side sleeper.
Emma has a 365-night sleep trial and free returns. While these policies are very appealing, customer reviews on third-party sites suggest the process is more challenging than it is made out to be. Many customers have voiced service and order fulfillment concerns, earning Emma a “Poor” rating on Trustpilot. Moreover, Emma is unaccredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only a single 1-star review when this article was published. To top it off, Emma only offers a 10-year warranty—half of what a Canadian competitor like Douglas offers.
If you’re interested in similar, if not better, features at a more attractive price, you should look elsewhere. We recommend taking a closer look at Douglas. With Douglas, you enjoy the same 365-night sleep trial Emma offers, along with an extended warranty period, a true medium-firm feel, a complete bedding bundle at no extra cost, and up to $1,320 in savings.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival & Unboxing
In Canada, Emma is available exclusively on their Canadian website. It can be delivered free of charge throughout Canada and typically ships within 3–5 business days. The mattress arrives in a large cardboard box that requires at least two people to move. The box does have handles that make it easier to carry.
The Emma CliMax Hybrid is simple to unbox. The company also provides a scannable QR code with instructions to follow. Once out of its packaging, the mattress should fully expand within a few hours.
The Look & Feel
Like other online mattress brands, Emma has opted for a two-tone cover design, with a white knit top and darker base for its hybrid model.
Despite being advertised as medium-firm, the Emma CliMax Hybrid is closer to a firm mattress. The 4.7 inches of pocketed springs found in this hybrid offer extra structure and air ventilation than the all-foam models in the Emma lineup.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate This Mattress?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Emma Hybrid |
---|---|
Firmness: | 7.8 / 10 |
Edge support: | 7.8 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 6.3 / 10 |
Bounce: | 6.6 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
Despite advertising as a medium-firm mattress, third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us) revealed the Emma CliMax Hybrid to be much firmer than expected. At 7.8/10, this mattress is closer in feel to “firm” than “medium-firm.”
While a firm mattress may sound appealing, especially to those looking for full-body support, you’ll still want a mattress with some cushioning or ‘give’ on the top layer to relieve pressure point buildup. You may not sink enough into the mattress surface, especially if you weigh less than 150 lbs or sleep on your side.
If so, you’ll want to look into softer alternatives such as Douglas or Juno. Both mattresses scored closer to a true medium-firm feel and cost at least $1,000 less than the Emma CliMax Hybrid for a Queen.
Edge Support
Hybrid mattresses are popular among shoppers looking for a mattress with sturdy edges. A lack of structure at the sidewalls can cause problems for anyone who needs help getting up from a lower position.
The Emma CliMax Hybrid ranked above average in edge support, scoring 7.8/10. Because the edges of this mattress are reinforced, less effort is required to transition from lying down to sitting and standing.
Mattress shoppers with hip pain, joint pain, or limited mobility will significantly benefit from a mattress with solid edge support.
Motion Isolation
The Emma CliMax Hybrid received an average motion isolation score during 3rd-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). At 6.3/10, this mattress is a decent option if you share a bed with a partner or pet.
Bounce
For the bounce test, the Emma CliMax Hybrid scored 6.6/10. While this means the mattress will dampen some motion, you might also find it more challenging to shift your body position as you’ll likely sink into the surface a fair amount while propping yourself up.

Mattress Layers
The Emma CliMax Hybrid is made up of four layers. Like other hybrid mattresses on the market today, the layers in this mattress work together to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
- First layer: 1.2 inches of open-cell foam. This top layer is primarily responsible for dissipating body heat. Foam density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 2.1 inches of memory foam. This layer provides zoned support and pressure-point relief. Foam density: Unspecified.
- Third layer: 4.7 inches of pocketed coils. This layer adds stability to the mattress and is reinforced at the perimeter for edge support. The hollow channels in the springs also improve air circulation.
- Fourth layer: 3.2 inches of high-density foam. This base layer provides further support and is also reinforced at the perimeter for edge support. Foam density: Unspecified.
Of note: Emma does not publicly disclose foam density. When Mattress-Reviews.com contacted Emma’s customer support, they could not provide the foam density for any of their layers.
Mattress Cover
The mattress cover of the Emma CliMax Hybrid is made from a blend of polyester and elastane. Visually, it features a white knit top and a darker base. The top portion of the cover can be removed for machine washing.

At one point, Emma was using Amazon to ship its mattress, but it has since launched its own Canadian website and uses an assortment of couriers to fulfil orders.

Final Thoughts
You can’t deny Emma’s many global awards and countless positive customer reviews. That said, it’s important to consider two things.
First, the lack of transparency surrounding the composition of the mattress and its suitability for the needs of Canadian sleepers. When our team contacted Emma’s customer service team, we were given conflicting information about where Emma mattresses are manufactured for Canadian orders. We were first told it was Germany and later told it was the USA. The mattress tag itself states Mexico.
Second, there is an apparent disconnect between the glowing reviews on the brand’s website and the experience of Canadian customers. With an F rating on BBB and “Poor” on Trustpilot, complaints from customers on third-party review sites paint a very different picture of the company and highlight significant customer service issues.
Even the company’s price and policies are not compelling enough to warrant buying the Emma CliMax Hybrid. A Queen is regularly priced at $1,789 CAD, whereas you can get the made-in-Canada Douglas for $799 CAD. Emma’s year-long sleep trial is not an exclusive feature either—in fact, Douglas offers the same 365-night trial and a longer warranty.
Exploring Canada-based alternatives like Douglas may provide a more reliable and tailored solution for sleepers seeking a quality mattress from a customer-focused company.
