Bloom River can be purchased online from the Sleep Country website, as well as at Sleep Country stores in select Canadian cities.

Shipping is free for most addresses. However, there is a $120 fee for customers in Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The mattress arrives within 3–10 business days.

The Unboxing

Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, Bloom River is simple to unpack. Once unboxed, the mattress fully expands to 7 inches in height within a couple hours.

The Look

Bloom River features a simple grey colour with small perforations across the entire surface of the cover. (Note: The latest version of Bloom River may have a different cover design.) 

The Feel

Sleepers who like a firmer, less cushy mattress will feel comfortable on Bloom River (for more details, see the next section for testing conducted by third-party engineers).

When you lie down on Bloom River, its gel memory foam and transition foam layers work together to support your weight and let warm air circulate away from your body, so you can have a cooler sleep.

Bloom River is available only in one firmness option, which is a similar approach to other bed-in-box brands like Juno.

Bloom River Mattress Layers

Bloom River contains three layers of foam. Like other all-foam budget mattresses, the layers of Bloom River work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.

• First layer: 0.75 inches of gel memory foam. This top layer provides immediate comfort as you lie down. The gel infusion should help to dissipate body heat. Sleep Country also mentions that this layer of foam contains latex lumbar support. Layer density: Unspecified.

• Second layer: 2.5 inches of convoluted foam. This egg-carton-shaped transition foam provides an overall balance between the top and bottom layers, while allowing hot air a passageway out through the sidewalls of the mattresses. Layer density: Unspecified.

• Third layer: 3.75 inches of support foam. This relatively thin base layer helps give the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. Like other Bloom mattresses, this layer is made with bamboo charcoal to help curb the gradual buildup of mattress odours. Layer density: Unspecified.

Of note: Foam density or origin information for Bloom River is not publicly available.

Bloom River Mattress Cover

The Bloom River mattress that we purchased for this review has a simple grey cover without any design flourishes or brand identifiers. Tiny perforations in the woven fabric cover the entire surface, giving Bloom River a bit of texture when you run your hand along it.

Note: The latest version of Bloom River appears to have a white cover with a jacquard design and Bloom logo on the sidewall.

The top cover on Bloom River is machine washable (delicate cycle, cold or warm water). To remove it, you need to access a zipper located underneath the mattress. This makes it less convenient to remove the cover than for Bloom Cloud, Bloom Air, or Bloom Mist, each of which has their zipper along the top perimeter of the mattress.

Bloom is a mattress brand owned and sold by Sleep Country Canada. Introduced in 2017 and now comprising five different models (Cloud, Air, Mist, Earth, River), Bloom mattresses compete with other bed-in-a-box companies like Endy, Casper, and GoodMorning.com. 

Today, Bloom has grown to offer a full lineup of sleep accessories, including a mattress topper, pillow, sheet set, and bed base.

Sleep Country has been a fixture of the Canadian retail landscape since the mid 90s, and is best known by their catchy advertising jingle (“Why buy a mattress anywhere else?”).

Sleep Country uses any combination of FedEx, Purolator, and Canada Post to deliver Bloom mattresses to customers across Canada. Shipping is free to all provinces except Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, and Newfoundland and Labrador ($120 CAD surcharge). Bloom customers can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 10 business days.

Bloom customers can also take advantage of Sleep Country’s White Glove Service, which brings the mattress into the home, sets it up on the bed, and can remove the old mattress (for a $15.75 Green Fee).

Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Sleep Country heavily promotes their Comfort Guarantee. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length for the industry. Sleep Country and Bloom differ in two ways from other brands in the bed-in-a-box space in regards to the limitations of their exchange policy:

1. The Bloom River mattress can only be returned to Sleep Country for an in-store credit.
2. Customers who decide to return their Bloom mattress must pay an exchange fee of $65 CAD to cover delivery of the new item and removal of the returned mattress. This approach to sleep trials and returns is different from mattress lines like Juno, who offer a 120-night trial and free returns.

With Bloom River occupying the value foam segment — and four other Bloom mattresses taking the higher price points — Bloom can now claim they have “A Bloom for every room.”

Bloom River performed fine according to our third-party engineer test results. Scores in edge support, motion isolation, and bounce were about average for an all-foam mattress. What stands out most is Boom River’s relatively high Firmness rating. At 7.4 / 10, Bloom River has the least amount of sinkage of the entire Bloom mattresses lineup. If Bloom River is on your mattress short-list, we recommend trying it first at a Sleep Country store to make sure it feels comfortable to you.
