Overall Rating
The Bloom Earth memory foam mattress is part of Sleep Country’s foray into the bed-in-a-box space. Of the four mattresses in the Bloom lineup, Bloom Earth occupies the lowest price segment; it squares off with other value mattresses from both Canada (Juno) and China (Zinus, PerfectSense, Lucid). The Bloom Earth mattress is made in China, retails at $589 CAD for a queen, and can be returned only for in-store credit.

Following the launch of the Bloom Cloud in 2017, Sleep Country introduced the Bloom Earth and two other sibling mattresses in 2018. The move to a bed-in-a-box mattress line was a natural progression for the specialty sleep store. Known for their memorable radio jingle (“Why buy a mattress anywhere else?”), Sleep Country has now been a staple of the Canadian retail landscape since the mid-1990s.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Sleep Country uses the Purolator Ground shipping service to deliver the Bloom Earth mattress directly to customers’ doors across Canada. In some cases, the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Shipping is free to all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador ($120 CAD surcharge), and Bloom customers can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 10 business days.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Sleep Country heavily promotes their Comfort Guarantee. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length for the industry. Sleep Country and Bloom Earth differ in two ways from other brands in the bed-in-a-box space in regards to the limitations of their exchange policy:
- The Bloom Earth mattress can only be returned to Sleep Country for an in-store credit.
- Customers who decide to return their Bloom mattress must pay an exchange fee of $65 CAD to cover delivery of the new item and removal of the returned mattress. This approach to sleep trials and returns is different from mattress lines like Juno, who offer a 120-night trial and free returns.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information via the ‘Live Chat’ function on Sleep Country’s website.

The Bloom Earth mattress we ordered through Sleep Country’s website was delivered to us within the estimated time frame, with only minor discolouration to the box. This is normal for mattresses delivered in a box. It’s why specialist bed-in-a-box retailers include multiple layers of durable plastic protection to compensate for any mishaps during the transit process.
The Bloom Earth mattress box was sealed well with heavy-duty tape. A pair of scissors or a knife was needed to open the box. To avoid damage to your new purchase, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out from its cardboard container. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most efficient to do this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
The Bloom Earth mattress is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic – a thin inner layer to compress it in a vacuum seal, and a thick outer layer to keep the mattress tightly rolled in a cylinder shape.
Customers will need to slice open the outer layer in order to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Next, unfold the mattress and place it rightside up along the designated bed frame. Cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. For the 8” Bloom Earth mattress, full expansion took around 6 hours.

The Bloom Earth is a 8-inch-tall combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Sleep Country has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
The Bloom Earth mattress is available only in one firmness option. This is standard for the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach commonly used by bed-in-a-box companies.
Bloom Earth Mattress Layers
The Bloom Earth mattress contains three layers of foam. Like many of the memory foam mattresses on the market today, each layer of foam in the Bloom Earth mattress works with the others to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The first layer of the Bloom Earth mattress is 1 inch of gel memory foam. This green top layer is designed to stay cool enough to help regulate body temperature overnight.
The second layer of the Bloom Earth mattress is 2.75 inches of convoluted foam. This “egg carton” transition foam provides an overall balance between the top and bottom layers, while allowing hot air a passageway out through the sidewalls of the mattresses.
The third layer is 4.25 inches of support base foam. This relatively thin base layer helps give the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. Unlike other Bloom mattresses, this layer does not include bamboo charcoal to help curb the gradual buildup of mattress odours.
Of note: Unfortunately, the density information for the layers is not available on the Sleep Country website.
Bloom Earth Mattress Cover
Unlike the other three Bloom mattresses currently available for sale, the Bloom Earth has a simple grey cover without any decorations or brand identifiers.
The top cover is machine washable, which is a plus for anyone who decides not to use a mattress protector, or simply anyone who likes to keep their sleep surfaces as clean and fresh as possible. The grey cover can be zipped off from the base fabric, put in the washing machine on a delicate setting, and tumble dried.
However, the zipper is located entirely underneath the mattress. This makes it less convenient to remove the cover than for the Bloom Cloud, Bloom Air, or Bloom Mist, each of which has their zipper along the top perimeter of the mattress.
Of note: The cover composition is not listed on the product label or the Sleep Country website.
Bloom Earth Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Feel & Firmness
The Bloom Earth mattress has a medium level of firmness, bordering on medium-soft. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it comes in at a 4.2 / 10 on the firmness spectrum. The Bloom Earth mattress has a bit of ‘hug’ as you lie down on it.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Earth mattress ranked at 7.3 /10 on the motion isolation scale.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main considerations for customers who move from innerspring mattresses to foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Earth mattress has an edge support rating of 5.9 / 10.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is very high, bounce is usually very low. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Earth mattress ranked 4.1 / 10 on the bounce scale.

Who buys a Bloom Earth mattress?
Bloom Earth is sold for the lowest price of Sleep Country’s four Bloom mattresses. Its grey cover design makes it visually distinct from its sibling mattresses, suggesting it competes for a different market entirely. As such, when evaluating the different mattresses, Bloom shoppers will need to determine which features are essential to their purchase decision and which ones are simply nice-to-haves.
The Bloom Earth mattress ranks among the least firm of the four Bloom models currently on the market; this likely comes as a result of its thinner size and convoluted foam layer, pockets of empty space within the transition layer. At the budget price point, cost becomes the primary consideration in the buying decision, with longevity, country of origin, and foam certification taking a back seat. Customers considering a Bloom mattress are likely also looking at budget mattresses for sale at IKEA or on Amazon. As a result, Sleep Country relies on brand loyalty and in-store experience to capture market share from their low-cost competitors.
The in-store test becomes more important as unlike most online mattress brands, there is a $65 fee for exchanging this mattress post-purchase. In-store credit is the only option for returns; customers who are choosing between the Bloom Earth and competitor’s mattress are advised to first try the one with a full refund guarantee.
Buy Bloom Earth if you want:
- A no-frills, value-priced foam mattress
