How we reviewed the Bloom Air mattress
As with all mattress reviews and comparisons on Mattress-Reviews.com, GoodMorning.com Inc. tests major online mattress brands to continually update and improve its own products. Analyzing the builds, brands, and specifications of competitor mattresses ensures GoodMorning.com always offers the best possible value to its customers.
To provide a consistent benchmark for our tests, we commission third-party engineers to test every mattress in the exact same way. You can view the methodology of testing and the APEGA-stamped results document here.

Following the launch of the Bloom Cloud in 2017, Sleep Country introduced the Bloom Air in 2018. The move to a bed-in-a-box mattress line was a natural progression for the specialty sleep store. Known for their memorable radio jingle (“Why buy a mattress anywhere else?”), Sleep Country has now been a staple of the Canadian retail landscape since the mid-1990s.
Shopping Tips

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Sleep Country uses the Purolator Ground shipping service to deliver the Bloom Earth mattress directly to customers’ doors across Canada. In some cases, the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Shipping is free to all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador ($120 CAD surcharge), and Bloom customers can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 10 business days.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Sleep Country heavily promotes their Comfort Guarantee. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length for the industry. Sleep Country and Bloom Air differ in two ways from other brands in the bed-in-a-box space in regards to the limitations of their exchange policy:
- The Bloom Air mattress can only be returned to Sleep Country for an in-store credit.
- Customers who decide to return the Bloom Air mattress must pay an exchange fee of $65 CAD to cover delivery of the new item and removal of the returned mattress. This approach to sleep trials and returns is different from leading online mattress brand Douglas, who offers an industry leading 365-night trial and free returns.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information via the ‘Live Chat’ function on Sleep Country’s website.

The Bloom Air mattress we ordered through Sleep Country’s website was delivered to us within the estimated time frame, with only minor wear and tear to the box. This is normal for mattresses delivered in a box. It’s why specialist bed-in-a-box retailers include multiple layers of durable plastic protection to compensate for any mishaps during the transit process.
The Bloom Air mattress box was sealed well with heavy-duty tape and industrial staples. A pair of scissors or a knife is needed to open the box. To avoid damage to your new purchase, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box. It is worth noting that the Bloom Air mattress box has plastic handles which making moving the package a little easier.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out from its cardboard container. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most efficient to do this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
The Bloom Air mattress is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic – a thin inner layer to keep it compressed in a vacuum seal, and a thick outer layer to keep the mattress tightly rolled in a cylinder shape.
Customers will need to slice open the outer layer in order to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Next, unfold the mattress and place it rightside up along the designated bed frame. Cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. For the 9.5” Bloom Air mattress, full expansion took around 6 hours.

The Bloom Air is a 9.5-inch-tall combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Sleep Country has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
The Bloom Air mattress is available only in one firmness option. This is standard for the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach commonly used by bed-in-a-box companies.
Bloom Air Mattress Layers
The Bloom Air mattress contains three layers of foam. Like many of the memory foam mattresses on the market today, each layer of foam in the Bloom Air mattress works with the others to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The first layer of the Bloom Air mattress is 2 inches of plush gel memory foam. This green top layer is designed to quickly conform to the body’s shape, reducing motion transfer while cradling shoulders and hips.
The second layer of the Bloom Air mattress is 0.5 inches of aerated memory foam. This transition layer provides an overall balance between the cushy top layer and the thicker base layer, while also keeping the mattress’ temperature more consistent.
The third layer is 7 inches of support base foam. This layer helps give the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. The upper region of this layer has air channels cut along the width of the mattress (featured above) to promote air circulation. It is also includes bamboo charcoal to help curb the gradual buildup of mattress odours.
Of note: Unfortunately, the density information for the layers is not available on the Bloom Air website.
Bloom Air Mattress Cover
Like the Bloom Cloud, the Bloom Air mattress has a unique cover design which focuses on neutral pastel colors (very similar to this website), with turquoise, soft grey, and white. The turquoise accents include the zipper along the upper perimeter, which connects the washable top cover to the base fabric, and the embroidered Bloom logo at the foot of the mattress.
The top cover is machine washable, which is a plus for anyone who decides not to use a mattress protector, or simply anyone who likes to keep their sleep surfaces as clean and fresh as possible. The white cover can be zipped off from the base fabric, put in the washing machine on a low heat, and air dried. One limitation we found was that the zipper does not always stay flush on the upper edge of the mattress, especially if a sleeper moves around a lot during the night. Customers initially drawn to the clean, minimalist aesthetics may find this result frustrating in practice.
The Bloom Air mattress is also advertised as having an ‘Organic Cotton’ washable top cover. This is a nice addition to the bed; however, we were unable to find the fabric content breakdown on the law label to validate that the cover contains organic cotton. The color of the cover was very white (almost bleached-looking), which is unusual in fabrics that are considered to be 100% organic cotton.
Bloom Air Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Firmness | 4.3 / 10 |

Feel & Firmness
The Bloom Air is a medium-soft mattress. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it comes in at a 4.3 / 10 on the firmness spectrum. The Bloom Air mattress has some ‘hug,’ and the comfort layer gives it an extra degree of softness as you lie down.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Air mattress ranked at 6.5 /10 on the motion isolation scale.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main considerations for customers who move from innerspring mattresses to foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Air mattress has an edge support rating of 7.1 / 10.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is very high, bounce is usually very low. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bloom Air mattress ranked 3 / 10 on the bounce scale.

Who buys a Bloom Air mattress?
Bloom Air is the second topmost tier of Sleep Country’s Bloom™ bed-in-a-box lineup, each of which is priced along $200 increments for a queen size. As such, Bloom shoppers will need to determine which features are essential to their purchase decision and which ones are simply nice-to-haves.
The Bloom Air mattress ranks among the softest of the four Bloom models currently on the market; this likely comes as a result of the two inches of gel memory foam at its top. Customers who like more ‘hug’ and the opportunity to try out the mattress in a store will be more likely to consider this mattress.
The in-store test becomes more important as unlike most online mattress brands, there is a $65 fee for exchanging this mattress post-purchase. In-store credit is the only option for returns; customers who are choosing between the Bloom Air and a mattress from another company are advised to first try the one with a full refund guarantee.
Buy Bloom Air if you want:
- To stick with the Sleep Country brand
- A machine-washable cover
- To try out the mattress in store
- An in-store exchange option for another Sleep Country product
