With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, memory foam mattresses are now shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than mattresses purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers are no longer required to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Bear uses logistics company FedEx to deliver their mattress to customers throughout Canada. In some cases the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Shipping is free, and Bear customers can expect a delivery notice from the company to arrive within 2 to 4 days. The new mattress should be delivered within 7 to 10 business days.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Bear heavily promotes their sleep trial. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length. For customers who choose to return their mattress within 30 to 100 days post-delivery, the company offers free mattress pick up and a full refund when returned.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process for the Bear mattress, but received this information via Bear’s website.

The Bear mattress arrived to us within the expected delivery time. The box was only slightly damaged in two corners from courier handling. This is normal for mattresses in boxes, a reason why retailers include layers of durable plastic protection around their mattresses to guard against any mishaps during the transit process.
The Bear mattress was sealed well with heavy-duty tape. A pair of scissors or a knife is needed to open the box. To avoid harm to yourself or your new purchase, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box. The Bear mattress box has small hand holes on either side which act as handles and make moving the box easier.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
The Bear mattress is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer of plastic, pull it loose, and use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to remove the remaining packaging. After completing this process, customers will see a folded unrolled, but folded mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions on the bed frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the Bear mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height soon enough. With the Bear mattress, full expansion took 2 minutes.

Bear is a combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, the company has designed a configuration that offers a comfortable, supportive and heat-regulated sleep.
The Bear mattress adheres to the one-size-fits-all approach often used by bed-in-a-box companies by offering one firmness option.
Bear Mattress Layers
The Bear mattress contains four layers of foam. Like many of the combination foam mattresses on the market today, each layer of foam in the Bear mattress works with the others to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The first layer of the Bear mattress has been designed to offer comfort and combat warm sleeping. With cooling memory foam, the top layer helps regulate your body temperature.
The second layer of the Bear mattress is a responsive comfort foam. The bounce provided in this foam combined with the third transitional layer of performance foam offers optimal pressure-point relief and comfort.
The final layer is made of high-density foam. Due to the high density, this foam adds to the durability and long-lasting support of this mattress.
Unfortunately, the density information for the layers is not available on the Bear website. When Mattress-Reviews.com contacted the Bear customer service through their online live chat, they were also not able to provide this information.
Bear Mattress Cover
The Bear mattress has a very neat, simple cover design. The top cover is white polyester with simple textured designs. The white continues down the side of the mattress but is soon replaced by a very dark grey, which is a notable yet pleasing contrast in design. The cover is not removable and is spot clean only; it is suggested that this is done with a small amount of warm water and mild detergent.
Bear Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.

Bear Mattress: Feel and Firmness
Feel & Firmness | Bear |
---|---|
Feel: | Medium |
Firmness | 5.1 / 10 |
Edge support: | 5.4 / 10 |

Feel & Firmness
The Bear mattress has a medium firmness. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it comes in at a 5.1 / 10 on the firmness scale. The Bear mattress does not have excessive ‘hug,’ and the cooling memory foam comfort layer gives it a degree of softness as you lie down. Its transitional layers, as well as its high-density support foam, ensure there is no excessive sinkage. This is normal for a medium mattress.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), minimal motion transfer was detected with the Bear mattress: it ranks 6.9 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the issues most commonly brought up by customers who move from innerspring mattresses to foam. The Bear mattress scores a bit above average in this regard. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it ranks 5.4 / 10 on the edge support scale.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is very high, bounce is usually very low. The Bear mattress had a relatively high rating for bounce compared to other foam mattresses, likely thanks to the responsive comfort foam in the second layer. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Bear mattress ranked 3.3 / 10 on the bounce scale.
