Overall Rating
As one of the first bed-in-a-box mattress companies in the U.S., Amerisleep has spent the past 10 years building a collection of mattresses for customers who want to choose between different firmness levels. Known for using higher-density foam in their mattresses, Amerisleep has now begun expanding into Canada. The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is made in the USA, retails at $1,749 USD for a queen, and can be returned during Amerisleep’s 100-night sleep trial.
Firmness
The model we have chosen for this review is the AS3, the medium firmness option. The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is available in one firmness level. Thorough testing carried out by our independent contract engineers place the AS3 mattress at 5.2 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
It is worth noting that the retail price increases along with softness of the mattress, with the AS1 firm mattress being the least expensive and the AS5 soft mattress being the most expensive.

With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses are now shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than when they could only be purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers are no longer required to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Amerisleep uses the specialist logistics companies UPS and FedEx to deliver the AS3 mattress directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the delivery can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. Canadian orders will be subject to $199 USD of transaction and processing fees. Amerisleep customers in Canada can expect their new mattress to be delivered within 3 to 4 weeks following order confirmation.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Amerisleep heavily promotes their take-home sleep trial. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length. Should you choose to return your mattress within the trial period, the company offer free mattress pick-up and a full refund upon return. Returned mattresses are sent either to a local charity or recycling facility.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information via the FAQ page on Amerisleep’s website.

The Amerisleep mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time; however, the box was slightly damaged upon arrival. This is normal of mattresses in boxes and is why specialist bed-in-a-box retailers include multiple layers of durable plastic protection to compensate for any mishaps during the transit process.
The Amerisleep mattress box was sealed well with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box. It is also worth noting that the Amerisleep mattress box has handle cut-outs, which make moving the box a little easier.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the room where you intend to keep up the mattress.
The Amerisleep mattress is protected with five layers of heavy-duty plastic. Customers will need to unwrap the first layer in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer of plastic, pull it loose, and use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to remove the remaining packaging. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The Amerisleep mattress will begin decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height soon enough. With the Amerisleep mattress, full expansion took 3 minutes.

The AS3 is a combination foam mattress. By combining different foam types, densities, and firmness levels, Amerisleep has designed a configuration that offers reasonable comfort, cooling, and support.
The Amerisleep mattress is available in five different firmness options, allowing customers to select from along a spectrum which includes: soft, medium-soft, medium, medium-firm, and firm. Amerisleep does not provide a mattress topper for customer’s who find the mattress too firm or too soft.
Amerisleep Mattress Layers
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress contains three layers of foam. Like many of the combination foam mattresses on the market today, all layers in the AS3 work together to provide an overall level of comfort and support.
The first layer of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress is 3″ of Bio-Pur™ memory foam. This top layer is designed to provide a balance between body support and heat-regulating performance. At a density of 4 lbs/ft3, this qualifies as high-density foam.
The second portion of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress is a 2″ affinity foam layer. At 1.5 lbs/ft3, this layer is considered low density. This transitional layer helps with body contouring, pressure-point relief, and prevents a sleeper from sinking too far into the Amerisleep mattress.
The third and final layer of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress is 7″ of Bio-Core™ support foam. This bottom section serves to maintain body alignment while reducing the likelihood of pressure points from forming. This layer also has a density of 1.5 lbs/ft3.
Amerisleep Mattress Cover
The Amerisleep mattress has a simple two-tone cover, an attractive contrast between a navy blue wall and the white sleep surface above. The five different mattresses are identifiable by how far the white cover descends down the side of the mattress. A zipper along the bottom of the mattress allows you to remove the cover entirely, while one midway along the mattress wall lets you remove just the machine-washable cover for when it needs cleaning. The cover itself is made from a blend of polyester, Celliant® fabric, and spandex, a mixture meant to optimize softness and breathability.
Amerisleep Mattress: Environmental Sustainability
GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. The AS3 mattress does have some ‘hug.’ The support foam ensures that there is no excessive sinkage.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), some motion transfer was detected with the Amerisleep mattress: it ranks 5.9 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for their edge support; in fact, it is often one of the main issues brought up to mattress retailers from customers who move from innerspring mattresses to foam. The Amerisleep mattress scores a around average in this regard. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it ranked 4.7 / 10 on the edge support scale.
Bounce
Due to the fact that motion isolation for foam mattresses is generally very good, bounce is generally very low. The AS3 is no exception in this regard. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Amerisleep mattress rated 2.9 / 10 for bounce, which is typical for combination foam mattresses.
