Tuft & Needle and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal customer base. So, what is the background behind Tuft & Needle and Douglas?
The Tuft & Needle mattress launched in 2012 on the Amazon marketplace. After launching their own website in 2014, Tuft & Needle quickly became one of the market leaders in the ‘bed-in-a-box’ space, and sell a straightforward 2-layer foam mattress, suited for price-conscious buyers.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Tuft & Needle and Douglas both use FedEx. Both mattresses are delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.

The Tuft & Needle mattress and Douglas mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Tuft & Needle mattress and Douglas mattress boxes were both sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Tuft & Needle mattress and Douglas mattress are both protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Tuft & Needle mattress or Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress took 3 minutes to fully expand. The Tuft & Needle mattress took 2 minutes to fully expand.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Layers
The Tuft & Needle mattress contains 2 layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Tuft & Needle mattress is 3″ of graphite and cooling gel foam. This layer is designed to provide optimal comfort and temperature regulation. This top layer of foam has a density of 2.8 lbs/ft3.
- The final layer of foam in the Tuft & Needle mattress is 7” of polyurethane foam. This layer which gives the Tuft & Needle mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. This layer of foam has a density of 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Cover
The Tuft & Needle cover is made up of a blend of micro polyamide and polyester. It has a soft, smooth feeling. The Tuft & Needle website claims that the micro polyamide dries 6-8 times faster than normal cotton allowing for a cooler, drier sleep.
The top cover is not machine washable, so you will need to spot clean stains.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
