2021 update: This particular model of Tempurpedic mattress may no longer be available.
Tempurpedic and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal customer base. So, what is the background behind Tempurpedic and Douglas?
Tempurpedic didn’t start out as a company specializing in mattresses. In fact, Tempurpedic was originally contacted by NASA to develop aircraft seat cushions. In 2012 Tempurpedic merged with the Sealy Corporation to combine resources and become the world’s largest bedding company. Tempurpedic has often been regarded as the gold standard in memory foam mattresses up until recent years as companies like Octave have begun to manufacture memory foam mattresses with almost identical or even more advanced cooling features for much less.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
The Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress used in this review was ordered at a local Sleep Country mattress store on a Thursday afternoon and the mattress was delivered on the following Monday morning.
Mattress retailers often use their own delivery service to deliver Tempurpedic mattresses. The delivery is often ‘white glove’, which means that the mattress is delivered to the room of choice, placed on the bed, the packaging is removed, and the old mattress is taken away.
Shipping time for Tempurpedic and Douglas are the same. Both mattresses will be delivered within 10 days.
Each mattress retailer who stocks and sells Tempurpedic mattresses may or may not offer a sleep trial. Tempurpedic doesn’t offer a sleep trial to Canadian shoppers. Also, mattress buyers in Canada who choose to purchase a Tempurpedic mattress at a retail store may incur restocking fees for returned mattresses. This is dependent on the individual retailer’s terms and conditions.
Unlike Tempurpedic, Douglas heavily promotes their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has one of the longest sleep trials of all mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Douglas mattress within the 365-night sleep trial, Douglas will arrange to pick up the mattress and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for the Douglas mattress.

Tempurpedic vs Douglas: Out of the Box

Expansion time: | No expansion time | 3 minutes |
The Tempurpedic mattress is not delivered in a box. Depending on the retailer, white-glove delivery service is often included in the price of a Tempurpedic mattress.
The Douglas mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time. The Douglas mattress is delivered compressed in a box. The Douglas mattress was well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the box to protect the mattress during shipping.
The Douglas mattress box was sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Douglas mattress is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress took 3 minutes to fully expand.

- The third and fourth layer of foam in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress is 2.5” and 5″ of polyurethane support foam. This layer which gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far.
- Tempurpedic does not publicly disclose the density information of any of the foam layers used in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
