Saatva and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal customer base. So, what is the background behind Saatva and Douglas?
Saatva is one of the only direct to consumer mattress companies selling mattresses with springs and a pillow-top. In 2017, the Saatva mattress became available to some Canadian cities; however, the company has since pulled out of Canada in order to focus on their American clientele.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

With the rise in popularity of ‘bed-in-a-box’, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than traditional mattresses. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Saatva delivers via white glove delivery, bringing a fully expanded mattress to the customer’s home and setting it up. Locally-contracted logistics companies are contracted to fulfill the white-glove delivery service.
Douglas uses FED/EX to deliver the compressed and boxed Douglas mattress. Both mattresses will be delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada. Because the Douglas mattress is in a box, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.
Shipping time for Saatva and Douglas is varied. The Saatva mattress will be delivered within 18 business days, whereas the Douglas mattress will be delivered within 10 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Saatva and Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has an industry leading sleep trial with a 365-night in-home sleep trial. While Saatva offers a respectable 180-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Saatva mattress or Douglas mattress within the sleep trial, both mattress companies will arrange to pick the mattresses up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for the Douglas mattress, however, Saatva will charge a $99 USD non-refundable shipping fee.
Saatva vs Douglas: Out of the Box

Expansion time: | Not delivered in a box | 2 minutes |
The Saatva mattress and Douglas mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time.
The Saatva mattress is not delivered to you in a box. A white-glove delivery service is included in the price of the Saatva mattress, this means that the Saatva mattress is shipped from Saatva’s manufacturing facility to a locally-contracted delivery company, and they will deliver it directly to the bedroom, place it on the desired bed, and remove all of the mattress packaging.
The Douglas mattress is delivered compressed in a box. The Douglas mattress was well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the box to protect the mattress during shipping.
The Douglas mattress box is sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed Douglas mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Douglas mattress is protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the momentum of pulling it with the rolled mattress shape to remove the outer layer. After completing this process, customers will see an unrolled mattress.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress expanded to its full height within 3 minutes.

The Saatva mattress and Douglas mattress are constructed very differently. The Saatva mattress is a hybrid mattress, whereas the Douglas mattress is a combination foam mattress. The Saatva mattress is available in 3 firmness options and the Douglas is available in one firmness option, medium-firm.
One of the major differences between the Saatva mattress and the Douglas mattress is the different types of foams used for comfort, contouring, and pressure point relief, and support layers for motion isolation and edge support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, both mattresses have a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, only the Douglas top cover is machine-washable.
Saatva vs Douglas Mattress Layers

Saatva Mattress Layers
The Saatva mattress contains 4 layers:
- The first layer of the Saatva mattress is 3” of bio-foam and this is used to provide comfort, contouring, and pressure point relief.
- The second layer of the Saatva mattress is a 5/8″ soft foam layer and a 3/8″ Visco lumbar pad and this is used to provide support underneath the bio-foam.
- The third layer of the Saatva mattress is a 4” individually wrapped coil system. The individually pocketed coils serve to contour with body movements and relieve pressure points.
- The final layer of the Saatva mattress is 7” of connected hourglass-shaped coils. This base support system is composed of recycled tempered steel and provide a sturdiness to the upper layers of the mattress.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Saatva vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Saatva
Douglas
Saatva Mattress Cover
The Saatva mattress cover is white with gold trimming and gold writing that boldly states its brand and its usage of organic cotton. The cover is sewn onto the mattress like most traditional mattresses and is not removable nor washable. This means part of the upkeep of this mattress is thorough spot cleaning when spills and stains are present.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
