Purple and Novosbed are two of the most well-known mattress brands in the USA and Canada, and all three brands have built up a loyal customer base. While Purple has begun pushing into Canada, Novosbed is a Canadian company, based in Alberta, that has been selling mattresses to Canadians since 2009. So, what is the background behind Purple and Novosbed?

Founded in 2013 in the United States, Purple offers service to both American and Canadian customers. Purple has made a name for themselves through viral videos, often featuring celebrities and extravagant characters to playfully identify the features of their products.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.

Both Purple and Novosbed use FED/EX to deliver their mattresses. Both brands are delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada and the USA. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.

Shipping time for the Purple mattress and Novosbed mattress is varied, but only be a few days. Purple mattresses will typically be delivered within 7 business days, and Novosbed mattresses will be delivered within 10 business day

As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Purple and Novosbed heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Novosbed has the longest sleep trial of all three mattress brands with a 120-night sleep trial. Purple only offers a 100-night sleep trial.

The Novosbed mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time. The Purple mattress was delivered to us in 11 days, 4 days more than the expected delivery time. Due to the fact that the Purple mattress used in this review was one of the first sold in Canada, logistics delays can occur when initially expanding into a new region or country. Purple state that delivery times in both the USA and Canada are 2-7 days as of April 2018.

Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.

The Purple mattress bag was well-sealed with a zip enclosure. Customers are provided with a tool to assist in opening the protective layer. The bag also has sturdy handles sewn-in which make moving the rolled mattress much easier.

Once unzipped, the compresses mattress was easy to remove from the bag. A simple ‘tip, lift, and slide’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the bag into a horizontal position, lift the bag opposite the unzipped end, and let the mattress slide out of the bag. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.

The Novosbed mattress box is sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.

The Purple mattress and Novosbed mattress are also both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.

Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled Purple mattress or Novosbed mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.

Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Purple mattress or Novosbed mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Novosbed mattress took 1 to 3 minutes to fully expand, depending on the firmness. The Purple mattress took just over a minute to fully expand.

The Purple mattress is a combination polymer and foam mattress and is only available in one firmness option. The Novosbed mattress uses high-density memory foam and is available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.

One of the major differences between the Purple mattress and the Novosbed mattress is the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.

Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the two mattresses tested, only the Novosbed has a machine-washable top cover.

The Purple mattress has an all-white cover design. The material used is very stretchy and breathable and complements the feel of the polymer material quite well. The embossed Purple logo on the sides adds a nice touch to the finished product.

The top cover has a zipper, allowing it to be removed for cleaning, but it is not machine washable. This could be problematic for anyone who chooses not to use a mattress protector or if the mattress is not properly protected while moving.
