Purple and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what is the background behind Purple and Douglas?
Founded in 2013 in the United States, Purple has made a name for themselves through viral videos, often featuring celebrities and extravagant characters to playfully identify the features of their products.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

With the rise in popularity of ‘bed-in-a-box’, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than traditional mattresses. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Both Purple and Douglas use FedEx to deliver their mattresses in Canada. Both brands are delivered directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.
Shipping time for the Purple mattress and Douglas mattress is varied, but should only be a few days. Purple mattresses will typically be delivered within 7 business days, and Douglas mattresses will be delivered within 10 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Purple and Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has the longest sleep trial of both mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial. Purple only offers a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Purple mattress or Douglas mattress within the sleep trial, both companies will arrange to pick the mattresses up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for either of the two mattresses.

The Douglas mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time. The Purple mattress was delivered to us in 11 days, 4 days more than the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Purple mattress bag was well-sealed with a zip enclosure. Customers are provided with a tool to assist in opening the protective layer. The bag also has sturdy handles sewn-in which make moving the rolled mattress much easier.
Once unzipped, the compressed mattress was easy to remove from the bag. A simple ‘tip, lift, and slide’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the bag into a horizontal position, lift the bag opposite the unzipped end, and let the mattress slide out of the bag. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Douglas mattress box is sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Purple mattress and Douglas mattress are also both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled Purple mattress or Douglas mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Purple mattress or Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress took 3 minutes to fully expand. The Purple mattress took just over a minute to fully expand.

Purple vs Douglas Mattress Layers

Purple Mattress Layers
The Purple mattress contains 2 layers of foam and 1 layer of polymer:
- The first layer of the Purple mattress is perforated and is designed to provide pressure-point relief, bounce, and comfort. The top layer is made up of 2” Polymer.
- The second transitional layer of the Purple mattress is 3.5″ polyurethane foam. This layer works with the comfort layer to provide an additional level of support and pressure point relief. The second layer of the Purple mattress has a density of 2.0 lbs/ft3.
- The final layer of foam is a support layer which gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. The final layer of support foam in the Purple mattress is 4″ of polyurethane foam and has an average density of 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Purple vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Purple
Douglas
Purple Mattress Cover
The Purple mattress has an all-white cover design. The material used is very stretchy and breathable and complements the feel of the polymer material quite well. The embossed Purple logo on the sides adds a nice touch to the finished product.
The top cover has a zipper, allowing it to be removed for cleaning, but it is not machine washable. This could be problematic for anyone who chooses not to use a mattress protector or if the mattress is not properly protected while moving.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
