Octave is manufactured by GoodMorning.com, one of the most established mattress companies in North America that sells directly to consumers. Novosbed was manufactured by the same company when it was in production.

In the last 10 years, the company has sold over 350,000 mattresses across the United States and Canada. GoodMorning.com maintains an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau and an “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot.

Launched in 2009, Novosbed was one of Canada’s first bed-in-a-box brands and the first to offer a 120-night sleep trial. The company applied its deep experience and innovation to launch Octave in 2023. Octave is the next step in the evolution of Novosbed and has a reputation as Canada’s best cooling mattress.

Octave mattresses are engineered using leading-edge cooling features like a CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibre cover, heat-dissipating copper-infused memory foam, and phase-change material, along with five-zoned support, to offer an unmatched experience of coolness, comfort, and support. Octave comes in three models: Vista, Mirage, and Horizon.

When it was available in Canada, Novosbed shipped using FedEx from its manufacturing facilities within 3–10 business days and offered free shipping to most Canadian regions. Octave also uses FedEx to deliver their mattresses, and delivers directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. Octave shipping times are around 7–10 days for most of Canada. If you live in a remote location, the shipper may transfer your package to a local courier for delivery, and additional shipping costs may apply.

As with any other bed-in-a-box brands, Novosbed and Octave offer in-home sleep trials. Novosbed offered a 120-night sleep trial. (The company no longer provides this trial since Novosbed has been discontinued.) Octave offers a 365-night trial, one of the longest sleep trials in Canada. If a customer returns their Octave mattress within the trial period, the company will pick it up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees.

Both the Novosbed and Octave mattress boxes came in a cardboard box sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will need scissors or a knife to open the packaging. Be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box to prevent potential harm to yourself or your new mattress. It’s OK to recycle the box, but keep the plastic bag the mattress was shipped in, just in case you want to return it.

Unboxing

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slide the mattress out of its cardboard packaging slowly. Tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most practical to complete this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.

The Novosbed and Octave mattresses were wrapped in two layers of heavy-duty plastic. The inner layer compressed each mattress in a vacuum seal and the exterior layer kept it tightly bound in its cylinder shape.

Installation

We recommend placing the rolled-up mattress onto the designated bed frame for a more straightforward setup. Next, like the end of a roll of tape, find where the outer layer of plastic begins and start peeling it back. You can use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to help remove the rest of this layer, which could be up to a few metres long.

After completing this process, the mattress will rest unrolled before you. Next, cut and remove the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal is now broken, and your new mattress will begin to decompress. A bed-in-a-box mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes to a few days. The Octave and Novosbed mattresses expanded to their full height within a few minutes.

Octave Vista and Novosbed Medium are both three-layer memory foam mattresses. Novosbed came in three different firmness options, while Octave comes in one medium-firm option that’s ideal for all sleep styles. These mattresses also vary when it comes to height, density, composition, and sleep benefits.

The 11” Novosbed Medium is a Canadian-made mattress made of three layers of memory foam:

• First layer: 1” of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface.
• Second layer: 2” of cooling gel memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides some cooling, pressure-point relief, and reduces motion transfer.
• Third layer: 7” of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing body weight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity.

Octave Vista Mattress Layers

The 12” Octave Vista is a three-layer memory foam mattress that delivers an exceptional blend of cool, cushioned support.

• First Layer: 2” of CopperGel™ memory foam, paired with moisture-wicking PolarMAX® phase-change material. This high-performance layer pulls heat and sweat away from your body for a cooler, more comfortable sleep. Copper is also an antimicrobial metal, which helps reduce bacteria and maintain the cleanliness of your mattress.
• Second Layer: 2” of premium Elastex® foam makes up this responsive, body-contouring middle layer. It feels and responds like natural latex and adds a little extra bounce so you can shift positions more easily.
• Third Layer: 8” high-density, ultra-durable motion isolation support foam to help you stay asleep, even with a restless partner. This layer also contains air channels to let warm air escape and fresh air flow through.

The Novosbed features a white and chambray-blue exterior. The sidewalls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery for added durability. The machine-washable top cover has a white paisley pattern and is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel® (lyocell).

Octave Mattress Cover

Octave Vista is cool to the touch, thanks to CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres in the top cover. The upgraded Octave models—Mirage and Horizon—have a higher nanofibre density for an even cooler feel.

The mattress cover features a swirling, blue-grey pattern that is unique to each mattress on a white background with waterfall edges, highlighting the brand’s design aesthetic and personality. The removable, machine-washable cover connects to the navy blue base with a sturdy yet stylish zipper.

Feel & Firmness

According to testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the firmness and feel of the Novosbed mattress and Octave mattress are quite different.

• The Novosbed Medium is rated 3.7 / 10 on the firmness scale and falls within the medium to medium-soft range. The Novosbed mattress has some ‘hug’, meaning you will experience some sinking when you lay down on it. This level of firmness can be comfortable for side and back sleepers.
• The Octave Vista is a medium-firm mattress rated at 6.8 / 10 on the firmness scale. That means it will be slightly firmer while striking a good balance of comfort and support. Medium-firm mattresses are a great choice for most Canadian sleepers, as they tend to suit the widest range of body types and sleep styles.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses are not usually known for their edge support. While this holds true for the Novosbed, according to testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Octave mattress performs significantly better in this area.

• The Novosbed Medium mattress was rated at 3.8 / 10 on the edge support scale. Sleepers may have noticed the sidewalls dipping when they sat on the edge.
• The Octave Vista mattress was rated at 7.5 / 10 on the edge support scale. This above-average edge support score and means you can sit comfortably on its edge and easily get out of bed in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to memory foam. According to testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the Novosbed mattress and Octave mattress motion isolation are both above average.

• The Novosbed mattress has an above-average motion isolation, at 6.8 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
• The Octave mattress has above-average motion isolation, at 7.3 / 10 on the motion isolation scale. This represents an improvement in the mattress’s construction compared to the previous Novosbed.

Bounce

Because foam mattresses generally have very good motion isolation, bounce is usually very low. According to testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), the bounce of the Novosbed and Octave mattresses is below average.

• The Novosbed medium mattress has a below-average bounce, rated at 2.3 / 10 on the bounce scale.
• The Octave mattress is rated at 3.7 / 10 on the bounce scale. This can be attributed to its high motion isolation and foam composition. Thanks to its springiness and responsiveness, the layer of premium Elastex® foam will prevent you from getting “stuck” in the mattress, making it easier to shift positions or get out of bed.
