Lucid and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands online and both brands have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what is the background behind Lucid and Douglas?
Lucid capitalizes on the mattresses they import from China and on e-commerce marketplace platform Amazon. This is not to suggest the mattress is poor quality, but it does not stand up to the North American made mattresses tested on Mattress-Reviews.com. Lucid’s low price is comparable to many other Chinese imported brands like Zinus or Classic Brands mattresses.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

With the rise in popularity of ‘bed-in-a-box’, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than traditional mattresses. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Lucid use UPS to deliver their mattress and Douglas use FED/EX to deliver their mattresses in Canada. Both brands are delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.
Shipping time for the Lucid mattress and Douglas mattress is varied, but only be a few days. Lucid mattresses will typically be delivered within 5 business days, and Douglas mattresses will be delivered within 10 business days. The Lucid mattress is also Amazon Prime eligible, and if a customer is an Amazon Prime member, delivery can be as quick as next day.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has the longest sleep trial of both mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial. Lucid only offers a 30-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Douglas mattress within the sleep trial, they will arrange to pick the mattresses up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for the Douglas mattress.
The returns process for a Lucid mattress can be a little complicated. When contacted directly, the Lucid customer service team advised us that returns are as per the standard 30-day return policy on Amazon. However, for Lucid, the customer must bring the mattress to the carrier location handling the return. This means having to drive the box back to UPS.

The Douglas mattress was delivered to us within the expected delivery time. The Lucid mattress was delivered to us the day after ordering thanks to being an Amazon Prime member.
Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Lucid mattress box and the Douglas mattress box are both sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the boxes. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Lucid mattress and Douglas mattress are also both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled Lucid mattress or Douglas mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Lucid mattress or Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress took 3 minutes to fully expand.

Lucid
Douglas
Lucid Mattress Layers
The Lucid mattress contains 2 layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Lucid mattress is 2.5″ of ventilated gel memory foam and is designed to provide comfort and cooling.
- The second layer of the Lucid mattress is 7.5″ polyurethane foam. This layer works with the comfort layer to provide support and isolate movement.
- Lucid does not disclose the density of the foam layers on their website or on Amazon.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Lucid vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Lucid

Lucid Mattress Cover
The top cover of the Lucid mattress is a soft patterned breathable polyester and Tencel® cover. The Lucid mattress top cover is removable and machine washable. Simply zip off the top cover from the base unit and put in the washing machine on a low heat, and air dry once washed.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
