Leesa and Douglas are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what is the background behind Leesa and Douglas?
Leesa was founded in 2014 in the United States. The Leesa mattress is one of the most well-known ‘bed-in-a-box’ mattresses in the USA and has made a name for themselves through their philanthropic efforts and social impact, as well as by partnering with leading swimmer, Michael Phelps, leading gymnast, Aly Raisman, and the Washington Redskins NFL team.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

With the rise in popularity of ‘bed-in-a-box’, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than traditional mattresses. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Leesa uses UPS to deliver their mattresses to Canadians. Douglas used FED/EX. All three mattresses will be delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.
Shipping time for Leesa and Douglas is varied. The Leesa mattress will be delivered within 8 business days, whereas the Douglas mattress will be delivered within 10 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Leesa and Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has the longest sleep trial of all three mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial. Leesa only offers a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Leesa mattress or Douglas mattress within the sleep trial, both mattress companies will arrange to pick the mattresses up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for either of the mattresses.

The Leesa mattress and Douglas mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Leesa mattress and Douglas mattress boxes were both sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Leesa mattress and Douglas mattress are both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress, the top cover will be facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Leesa mattress or Douglas mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few seconds. The Douglas mattress expanded to its full height within 3 minutes, while the Leesa mattress took 48 hours to fully expand.

Also, both mattresses have a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the two mattresses tested, only the Douglas has a machine-washable top cover.

Leesa Mattress Layers
The Leesa mattress contains 3 layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Leesa mattress is perforated and is designed to provide airflow, bounce, and comfort. The 2″ Avena® foam Leesa use in this top layer has a medium density of 3.65 lbs/ft3.
- The second transitional layer of the Leesa mattress is 2″ of slower responding memory foam. This layer works with the comfort layer to provide an additional level of body contouring and pressure point relief. The second layer of memory foam in the Leesa mattress has a medium density of 3 lbs/ft3.
- The final layer of foam is a support layer which gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. The final layer of 6″ support foam in the Leesa mattress has an average density of 1.8 lbs/ft3. Most foam mattresses have a support layer density of between 1.5 lbs/ft3 and 2 lbs/ft3.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.

Leesa Mattress Cover
The Leesa mattress is one of the best-looking bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market. Its polyester and lycra white-on-grey cover is modern, stylish, and very soft. Despite its zipper, the topside is not machine washable. Still, this removable cover will make spot cleaning your Leesa mattress cover easier.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
