Layla and Douglas are two of the new players in the Canadian mattress scene, and both brands are building up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Layla and Douglas?
The Layla mattress was launched in 2015, marking the American online retailer’s entrance into the bed-in-a-box mattress space. As expected, the copper-infused memory foam is the key feature in their flagship mattress. Copper flakes are added into the mixture when pouring and creating the foam. Finally, the Layla can be flipped, with different firmness levels on either face of the mattress.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Layla uses UPS deliver their mattresses to most parts of Canada—for a $125 fee. Douglas offers their mattress across Canada, using FedEx to ship directly to customers’ doors at no cost to the buyer. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.
Customers who order either mattress can expect their delivery to arrive within 10 days after order confirmation.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Layla and Douglas both heavily promote their sleep trials. With 365-night sleep trials, Douglas has one of the longest sleep trials of all mattress brands. Layla offers a 120-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Layla or Douglas mattress within the sleep trial period, each company will arrange to pick up their respective mattress and issue a full refund; however, Layla will deduct return shipping fees in the refund amount. There are no additional return or restocking fees for Douglas.

Both the Layla and Douglas mattresses were delivered to us within the expected time frames. Each product was well-protected within the box by heavy-duty plastic to keep the mattress in good condition during shipping.
Each mattress box was sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the Douglas, but it is not essential for opening the Layla mattress box. To prevent potential harm to your new mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to remove any packaging.
Once opened, each compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out from its cardboard container. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most efficient to do this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
Both mattresses are protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic – a thick inner layer to keep it compressed in a vacuum seal, and thinner outer layers to keep the mattress tightly rolled in a cylinder shape.
Customers will need to unwrap the outer layers in order to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled up mattress onto the designated bed frame. Next, like the end of a roll of tape, find and peel back the outer layer of plastic. You can use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to help remove the rest of this layer, which could be up to a few meters long. After completing this process, the mattress will be lying unrolled before you.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will quickly begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. With Douglas and Layla, full expansion took 3 minutes.

The Layla and Douglas are both combination foam mattresses. While Douglas is available in one firmness option, the Layla can be flipped over, giving users the option between medium-firm and medium-soft configurations.
Some of the major differences between the Layla mattress and the Douglas are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases the brand’s personality and design aesthetic. Top covers are sometimes washable, and of these two mattress brands, only the Douglas has a machine-washable top cover.

Layla Mattress Layers
The Layla mattress contains four layers of foam. The order in which they appear determines whether the mattress is medium-firm or medium-soft.
- The outer layer on either side of the Layla mattress was created to provide an optimal level of comfort and cooling. Infused with copper, these layers help regulate body temperature. Layla has used this material within their mattresses to alleviate one of the major drawbacks of foam: ‘sleeping hot.’ The soft layer comes in at a 3.5 lbs/ft3 density, while the firm layer shown at the top of the image above is just 1” thick but still provides rapid heat transfer, compression support, and antimicrobial properties.
- The second and thickest layer is a 4.5″ tier designed to provide core support at a density of 2 lbs/ft3.
- The third layer of the Layla mattress is 2″ of convoluted support foam. This 1.8 lbs/ft3 foam was designed to maximize air flow and breathability.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Layla vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Layla
Douglas
Layla Mattress Cover
The Layla mattress has a unique cover design patterned with three-dimensional cubes, stretching across the top surface and extending midway down the side walls. It’s like sleeping on a portrait by M.C Escher, the artist best known for his optical illusions. The white and light grey accents are presented through the use of the zipper, which connects the washable top cover to the base fabric.
When in need of cleaning, the top cover can be zipped off from the base unit and taken to the dry cleaners. One limitation we found with the zipper location for the top cover was that the zipper does not always stay flush on the upper edge of the mattress, especially if a sleeper moves around a lot during the night. Customers who require perfect aesthetics may find this frustrating.
The Layla mattress top cover is quite the composition. Their support staff note that it contains 66% polyester, 30% viscose, 4% poly/lycra, and is woven with the registered Thermogel® cooling agent for added comfort.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
