Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed are four of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada, and all four brands have built up their own loyal Canadian customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed?
Endy
Endy is a bed-in-a-box mattress brand owned by Sleep Country, Canada’s largest chain of mattress retail stores. The company has been selling its “one-size-fits-all” foam mattress since 2015, competing with other online brands like Casper and Douglas. Endy mattresses are made in Ontario and Quebec and shipped out from distribution centres in Ontario and British Columbia. In 2022, the company expanded its mattress lineup with the Endy Hybrid, a more firm version of their foam mattress mixing foam and coils.
Casper
Casper introduced their bed-in-a-box in 2014 by launching a single firmness, ‘one-size-fits-all’ mattress. The Casper mattress initially launched in the USA but has since expanded to Canada. Having received tens of millions of dollars of funding from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Target Corporation, the Casper mattress quickly became the market leader in the bed-in-a-box space.
Douglas
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.
Novosbed
GoodMorning.com released their first memory foam mattress, Novosbed, in 2009, making them one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. Their innovative culture soon went on to create the now universal idea of the ‘Sleep Trial,’ giving online mattress shoppers a way to bypass the traditional mattress store shopping experience and test out their new bed at home for as long as it actually takes to evaluate a mattress properly.

With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, memory foam mattresses are now shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than mattresses purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Both Casper and Endy use UPS to deliver their mattresses to Canadians. Douglas and Novosbed use FedEx. All four mattresses are delivered directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.
Shipping time for Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed varies. The Endy mattress, Douglas mattress, and Novosbed mattress will be delivered within 10 business days, whereas the Casper mattress will be delivered within 6 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. With a 365-night and 120-night sleep trial, Douglas and Novosbed have some of the longest sleep trials in Canada. Endy and Casper both offer only a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Endy, Casper, Douglas, or Novosbed mattress within the sleep trial, all four companies will arrange to pick up the mattresses and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for any of the four mattresses.

The Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed mattresses were delivered to us within the expected delivery time. All four mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed mattress boxes were all sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed mattresses are all protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic, and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress onto the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove the outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions along the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Endy, Casper, Douglas, or Novosbed mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few seconds. The Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed mattresses all expanded to their full height within 5 minutes.

The Endy mattress, Casper mattress, and Douglas mattress are all combination foam mattresses, and all three are only available in one firmness option. All are compressed, rolled, and shipped in a box.
The Novosbed mattress uses high-density memory foam and is available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.
Some of the major differences among the Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Novosbed mattresses are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these vary slightly in height and density.
Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases the brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the four mattresses tested, only the Douglas and Novosbed have a machine-washable top cover.

Endy Mattress Layers
The Endy mattress contains three layers of foam:
- The first layer is 2” of Endy comfort foam. This layer is designed to provide optimal comfort and temperature performance.
- The second layer of the Endy mattress is 3” of polyurethane foam. This layer works with the comfort layer to provide an additional level of support and will help conform to the body.
- The final layer of foam in the Endy mattress is 5” of polyurethane foam. This layer which gives the Endy mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far.
- Endy does not provide density information for their top layer of foam. The second and third layer of the Endy mattress are both 1.8lbs/ft3.
Casper Mattress Layers
The Casper mattress contains four layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of ‘open-cell’ polyurethane foam. This top layer is designed to provide comfort and heat-regulating performance.
- The second layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, will help conform to your body shape, and assist with pressure-point relief.
- The third layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of zoned polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a transitional layer between the two comfort layers and the final support layer. This layer is ‘zoned,’ meaning the firmness varies under the shoulder and hip areas.
- The final layer of foam in the Casper mattress is 5.5” of support foam. This layer gives the Casper mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep.
- Casper does not provide density information for any of their layers of foam.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Novosbed Mattress Layers
Novosbed mattress contains three layers of foam.
Novosbed Soft Mattress:
- First layer: 2 inch of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of plush serene memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief and reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Third layer: 7 inches of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity.
- First layer: 1 inch of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of high-density gel memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief and reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.
- Third layer: 7 inches of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity.

Endy Mattress Cover
The Endy mattress has a two-tone cover. The bottom part is a heavier-duty grey fabric, and the top part is white with a diamond-knit pattern. The top part of the cover is made primarily of polyester and contains a small amount of Lycra for stretch. Endy does not highlight eco-conscious fabric. The top portion of the Endy mattress can be unzipped and cleaned in the washing machine as necessary.
Casper Mattress Cover
The Casper mattress has a simple two-tone cover. The side fabric used on the Casper mattress cover is a heavy-duty, charcoal-colored, polyester and spandex fabric. This is a nice contrast to the white polyester top cover. The Casper mattress set the trend for the ‘less-is-more’ mattress aesthetic, and this approach to mattress design has been adopted by many new mattress brands.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
Novosbed Mattress Cover
This distinctive Novosbed cover is an expression of the luxury that lies beneath. The soft sleep surface is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel®, while the lower side walls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery. This white and chambray-blue exterior is designed not only for an attractive, signature look, but also for functionality.
The top cover is machine washable, with simple cleaning instructions:
- Zip off the upper portion of the cover;
- Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle;
- Tumble-dry on low, or air dry.
