2021 update: This particular model of Tempurpedic mattress may no longer be available.
Casper, Tempurpedic, and Novosbed are three of the most well-known mattress brands in the USA and Canada, and all three brands have built up a loyal customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Casper, Tempurpedic, and Novosbed?
Casper introduced their bed-in-a-box in 2014 by launching a single firmness, ‘one-size-fits-all’ mattress. The Casper mattress initially launched in the USA but has since expanded to Canada. Having received tens of millions of dollars of funding from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Target Corporation, the Casper mattress quickly became the market leader in the bed-in-a-box space.
Tempurpedic didn’t start out as a company specializing in mattresses. In fact, Tempurpedic was originally contacted by NASA to develop aircraft seat cushions. In 2012 Tempurpedic merged with the Sealy Corporation to combine resources and become the world’s largest bedding company. Tempurpedic has often been regarded as the gold standard in memory foam mattresses up until recent years as companies like Novosbed have begun to manufacture memory foam mattresses with almost identical features for much less.
GoodMorning.com released their first memory foam mattress, Novosbed, in 2009, making them one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. Their innovative culture soon went on to create the now universal idea of the ‘Sleep Trial,’ giving online mattress shoppers a way to bypass the traditional mattress store shopping experience and test out their new bed at home for as long as it actually takes to evaluate a mattress properly.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
The Tempurpedic mattress was delivered to us in a very reasonable time frame. The Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress used in this review was ordered at a local Sleep Country mattress store on a Thursday afternoon and the mattress was delivered on the following Monday morning.
Mattress retailers often use their own delivery service to deliver Tempurpedic mattresses. The delivery is often ‘white glove,’ which means that the mattress is delivered to the room of choice, placed on the bed, the packaging is removed, and the old mattress is taken away.
Shipping time for Tempurpedic and Novosbed are the same. Both mattresses will be delivered within 10 days. The Casper mattress will be delivered within 6 business days.
Each mattress retailer who stocks and sells Tempurpedic mattresses may or may not offer a sleep trial. Tempurpedic customers in the U.S. who choose to purchase their Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress directly through Tempurpedic will receive a 90-night sleep trial. Unfortunately, this is not available in Canada.
Unlike Tempurpedic, Casper and Novosbed heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Novosbed has one of the longest sleep trials of all mattress brands with a 120-night sleep trial. Casper offers only a 100-night sleep trial.
Customers in both the USA and Canada who choose to purchase a Tempurpedic mattress at a retail store may incur restocking fees for returned mattresses. Again, this is dependent on the individual retailer’s terms and conditions.
However, if a customer wishes to return their Casper mattress or Novosbed mattress within the sleep trial, both companies will arrange to pick up the mattresses and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for either of the mattresses.

The Tempurpedic mattress is not delivered in a box. Depending on the retailer, white-glove delivery service is often included in the price of a Tempurpedic mattress.
The Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
Both the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress boxes were both sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
Both the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress are protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress onto the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove the outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions along the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Casper mattress or Novosbed mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Casper and Novosbed mattresses both expanded to their full height within 3 minutes.

The Casper mattress and Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress are combination foam mattresses and are both available only in one firmness option. The Novosbed mattress uses high-density memory foam and is available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.
Some of the major differences among the Casper, Tempurpedic, and Novosbed mattresses are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the three mattresses tested, only the Tempurpedic mattress and Novosbed mattress have machine-washable top covers.

Casper Mattress Layers
The Casper mattress contains four layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of ‘open-cell’ polyurethane foam. This top layer is designed to provide comfort and heat-regulating performance.
- The second layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, will help conform to your body shape, and assist with pressure-point relief.
- The third layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of zoned polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a transitional layer between the two comfort layers and the final support layer. This layer is ‘zoned,’ meaning the firmness varies under the shoulder and hip areas.
- The final layer of foam in the Casper mattress is 5.5” of support foam. This layer gives the Casper mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep.
- Casper does not provide density information for any of their layers of foam.
Tempurpedic Mattress Layers
The Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress contains four layers of foam:
- The first layer of foam in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress is 1” of comfort foam. This layer is designed to provide optimal comfort and temperature performance.
- The second layer of foam in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress is 3” of higher density memory foam. This layer works with the comfort layer to alleviate pressure points and distribute body weight.
- The third and fourth layers of foam in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress are 2.5” and 5″ of polyurethane support foam. These layers give the mattress its structure and prevent sleepers from sinking in too deep.
- Tempurpedic does not publicly disclose the density information of any of the foam layers used in the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress.
Novosbed Mattress Layers
Novosbed mattress contains three layers of foam.
Novosbed Soft Mattress:
- First layer: 2 inch of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of plush serene memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief and reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Third layer: 7 inches of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity.

Casper vs Tempurpedic vs Novosbed Mattress Cover

Casper Mattress Cover
The Casper mattress has a simple two-tone cover. The side fabric used on the Casper mattress cover is a heavy-duty, charcoal-colored, speckled fabric. This is a nice contrast to the sharp, stretchy, and white polyester and lycra top cover. The Casper mattress set the trend for the ‘less-is-more’ mattress aesthetic, and this approach to mattress design has been adopted by many new mattress brands.
Tempurpedic Mattress Cover
The Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme mattress cover is split into two layers. The first cover layer is a combination of polyester and cotton that is white with a unique floral pattern. The top part of the cover is machine washable and can be removed with the zipper. The bottom part of the cover is made from polyester and helps with moisture wicking and temperature regulation.
Novosbed Mattress Cover
This distinctive Novosbed cover is an expression of the luxury that lies beneath. The soft sleep surface is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel®, while the lower side walls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery. This white and chambray-blue exterior is designed not only for an attractive, signature look, but also for functionality.
The top cover is machine washable, with simple cleaning instructions:
- Zip off the upper portion of the cover;
- Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle;
- Tumble-dry on low, or air dry.
