Value, Comfort, Benefits: Here's Why Douglas Triumphs Over the Casper and Simba Mattresses
To provide the closest mattress comparison for this article, we reviewed Casper Original, Simba 1500, and Douglas Original.
3-layer mattresses. Ordered online. Shipped to your home in a box. At first glance Casper, Simba, and Douglas have many things in common. This is why so many shoppers compare these three mattresses. But as our overall scores suggest, the comparison isn’t so close.
First and most obvious, the price. At $799 for a queen, Douglas is hundreds of dollars less than both Casper and Simba. Do you get less mattress with Douglas? Far from it. In fact, every Douglas mattress purchase also includes a free Comfort Sleep Bundle (premium pillows, cotton sheets, and waterproof mattress protector and pillow protectors).
Next is mattress performance. Some notable observations: Casper has the bounciest sleep surface (for a foam mattress); Simba has the strongest edge support (and firmest feel); but Douglas had the best overall mix of scores, including a well-balanced medium-firm feel and the highest motion isolation rating of the three.
Lastly, let’s cover customer benefits. This is where Douglas exceeds Casper and Simba most clearly. With a 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty, Douglas customers get more peace of mind and quality assurance compared to the more standard 100-night trial and 10-year warranty on Casper and Simba mattresses.
Want to learn more? Let’s explore these mattresses in depth and discover why Douglas comes out on top.

So, what are the backgrounds of Casper, Simba, and Douglas?
Casper introduced their bed-in-a-box in 2014 by launching a single firmness, ‘one-size-fits-all’ mattress. The Casper mattress initially launched in the USA but has since expanded to Canada. Having received tens of millions of dollars of funding from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Target Corporation, the Casper mattress quickly became the market leader in the bed-in-a-box space.
Simba was already an established brand in the UK before Sleep Country brought it to Canada in 2018. In the mid-2020, Simba’s Canadian operations underwent a considerable change in manufacturing, with Sleep Country versions now being made in Canada. Because of its exclusive contract with Sleep Country, the retail chain’s support team manages Simba’s Canadian customer service.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses are now delivered far more efficiently and conveniently than mattresses purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most online orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.
Both Casper, Simba, and Douglas mattresses are delivered directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.
Shipping times for Casper, Simba, and Douglas vary. The Casper mattress will be delivered within 6 business days, while the Simba and Douglas mattress will be delivered within 10 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Casper, Simba, and Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has the longest sleep trial of all three mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial. Casper and Simba both offer only a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their mattress within the sleep trial period, both Casper and Douglas will arrange to pick up the mattress and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for any these mattresses.
However, due to their partnership with Sleep Country, Simba’s exchange policy is limited compared to many bed-in-a-box brands:
- A Simba mattress can only be exchanged for another mattress in Sleep Country’s catalogue. Customers will have to pay the difference if their new mattress is more expensive. If it is less expensive, customers will receive in-store credit.
- Customers who decide to return their Simba must also pay an exchange fee of $65 CAD to cover the delivery of a new item and removal of the returned mattress.

The Casper, Simba, and Douglas mattresses were delivered to us within the expected delivery time frames. All three mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Casper, Simba, and Douglas mattress boxes were all sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Casper, Simba, and Douglas mattresses are all protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
How to finish unwrapping the mattress:
- Place the rolled mattress on the bed frame.
- Find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the bed frame.
- Once in position, remove the outer plastic layer. The mattress will then be folded and unrolled.
- Unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct position on the frame or foundation.
- Cut the final layer of plastic and the mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes.
The Casper mattress and Douglas mattress expanded to their full height within 3 minutes, while the Simba mattress took 12 hours to fully expand.

The Casper and Douglas mattresses are combination foam mattresses. The Simba mattress is a hybrid mattress. All are compressed and rolled, then shipped in a box, and available only in one firmness option.
Some of the major differences among the Casper, Simba, and Douglas mattresses are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases the brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the three mattresses tested, only the Douglas has a machine-washable top cover.
Casper vs Simba vs Douglas Mattress Layers

Casper Mattress Layers
The Casper mattress contains three layers of foam:
- First Layer: 2 inches of ‘open-cell’ polyurethane foam. This top layer provides comfort and moderate heat-regulation. The perforated foam allows for increased airflow throughout the top layer of the mattress.
- Second Layer: 2 inches of memory foam. Casper’s transition layer has zoned support, with additional firmness in the central third of the mattress.
- Third Layer: 7 inches of polyurethane support foam. This support layer gives the Casper mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep.
Note: Foam density information for Casper is not publicly available. Mattress-Reviews.com inquired about the density of foam used in its mattresses, but Casper Support stated that they could not disclose this information.
Simba Mattress Layers
The Simba mattress contains three layers:
- First layer: 1.25 inches of graphite-infused memory foam. This layer offers comfort and contouring. Memory foam has a much higher degree of sinkage than a springier material like latex. Because memory foam tends to trap heat, Simba has added graphite flakes in the foam to help with temperature control.
- Second layer: 1 inch of micro-coils. Simba’s coil layer is encased by foam and helps with motion isolation. The hollow channels in the springs also aid in temperature regulation by improving airflow throughout the mattress.
- Third layer: 7.75 inches of support foam. This bottom layer makes up the mattress’s foundation and keeps you from sinking in too deep. It also includes horizontal air channels that divide the mattress into seven zones, promoting spinal alignment and pressure-point relief.
Note: Simba does not publicly disclose foam density. When Mattress-Reviews.com contacted Simba customer support, they could not provide the foam density for any of their layers.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Casper vs Simba vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Casper

Douglas
Casper Mattress Cover
Casper set the trend for the ‘less-is-more’ aesthetic. This approach to mattress design has been adopted by many new mattress brands. The Casper mattress favours a neutral grey colour scheme and simple knit cover, with the dark blue Casper tag attached to the sidewall. Casper does not have a removable and machine-washable top cover. In the case of a spill or stain, the cover can be spot-cleaned.
Simba Mattress Cover
Simba’s simple white top cover is made primarily of polyester and contains a small amount of elastane for stretch. Synthetic materials are less breathable than natural or plant-derived fibres like Tencel™ or cotton. Simba does not list any eco-conscious fabrics in their outer layer construction. While Simba promotes the top cover’s antimicrobial benefits, it is neither removable nor machine washable.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.

- The Simba mattress has above-average edge support. It is rated at 8.1 / 10 on the edge support scale.
