Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed are three of the most well-known mattress brands in the USA and Canada, and all three brands have built up a loyal customer base. While Casper and Leesa have begun pushing into Canada, Novosbed is a Canadian company based in Alberta that has been selling mattresses to Canadians since 2009. So, what is the background behind Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed?
Casper introduced their bed-in-a-box in 2014 by launching a single firmness, ‘one-size-fits-all’ mattress. The Casper mattress initially launched in the USA but has since expanded to Canada. Having received tens of millions of dollars of funding from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Target Corporation, the Casper mattress quickly became the market leader in the bed-in-a-box space.
Founded in 2014 in the United States, the Leesa mattress is available to American and Canadian customers. The Leesa mattress is one of the most well-known ‘bed-in-a-box’ mattresses in the USA and has made a name for itself through the company’s philanthropic efforts and social impact, as well as by partnering with leading swimmer, Michael Phelps, leading gymnast, Aly Raisman, and the Washington Redskins NFL team.
GoodMorning.com released their first memory foam mattress, Novosbed, in 2009, making them one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. Their innovative culture soon went on to create the now universal idea of the ‘Sleep Trial,’ giving online mattress shoppers a way to bypass the traditional mattress store shopping experience and test out their new bed at home for as long as it actually takes to evaluate a mattress properly.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Both Casper and Leesa use UPS to deliver their mattresses to customers throughout Canada and the U.S. Novosbed uses FedEx. All three brands deliver directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada and the United Staes. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.
Shipping times for Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed are varied, but should only take a few days. Casper mattresses will typically be delivered within 6 business days, Leesa within 8, and Novosbed within 10.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Novosbed has the longest sleep trial of all three mattress brands at 120 nights. Casper and Leesa both offer only a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Casper, Leesa, or Novosbed mattress within the sleep trial, all three companies will arrange to pick up the mattresses and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for any of the three mattresses.

The Casper mattress, Leesa mattress, and Novosbed mattress were all delivered to us within the expected delivery timeframe. All three mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.
The Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed mattress boxes were all sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
The Casper mattress, Leesa mattress, and Novosbed mattress are all protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic, and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer of plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct positions on the frame or foundation.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Casper, Leesa or Novosbed mattress will start decompressing. The mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Casper and Novosbeds expanded to their full heights within 3 minutes. The Leesa mattress took 48 hours to fully expand.

The Casper mattress and Leesa mattress are combination foam mattresses, and both are available only in one firmness option. The Novosbed mattress uses high-density memory foam and is available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.
Some of the major differences among the Casper, Leesa, and Novosbed mattresses are the types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases the brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the three mattresses tested, only the Novosbed has a machine-washable top cover.

Casper Mattress Layers
The Casper mattress contains four layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of ‘open-cell’ polyurethane foam. This top layer is designed to provide comfort and heat-regulating performance.
- The second layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, will help conform to your body shape, and assist with pressure-point relief.
- The third layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of zoned polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a transitional layer between the two comfort layers and the final support layer. This layer is ‘zoned,’ meaning the firmness varies under the shoulder and hip areas.
- The final layer of foam in the Casper mattress is 5.5” of support foam. This layer gives the Casper mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep.
- Casper does not provide density information for any of their layers of foam.
Leesa Mattress Layers
The Leesa mattress contains three layers of foam:
- The first layer of the Leesa mattress is perforated and designed to provide airflow, bounce, and comfort. The 2″ Avena® foam used in this top layer has a medium density of 3.65 lbs/ft3.
- The second transitional layer of the Leesa mattress is 2″ memory foam. This layer has a slower response and works with the comfort layer to provide an additional level of body contouring and pressure point relief. The second layer of memory foam in the Leesa mattress has a medium density of 3 lbs/ft3.
- The final layer of foam is a support layer which gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep. The final layer of support foam in the Leesa mattress is 6″ of polyurethane foam and has an average density of 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Novosbed Mattress Layers
Novosbed mattress contains three layers of foam.
Novosbed Soft Mattress:
- First layer: 2 inch of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of plush serene memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief and reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Third layer: 7 inches of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity.
- First layer: 1 inch of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of high-density gel memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief and reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.

Casper vs Leesa vs Novosbed Mattress Cover
Casper

Casper Mattress Cover
The Casper mattress has a simple two-tone cover. The side fabric used on the Casper mattress cover is a heavy-duty, charcoal-colored, speckled fabric. This is a nice contrast to the sharp, stretchy, and white polyester and lycra top cover. The Casper mattress set the trend for the ‘less-is-more’ mattress aesthetic, and this approach to mattress design has been adopted by many new mattress brands.
Leesa Mattress Cover
The Leesa mattress is one of the best-looking bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market. Its polyester and lycra white-on-grey cover is modern, stylish, and very soft. Despite its zipper, the topside is not machine washable. Still, this removable cover will make spot cleaning your Leesa mattress cover easier.
Novosbed Mattress Cover
This distinctive Novosbed cover is an expression of the luxury that lies beneath. The soft sleep surface is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel®, while the lower side walls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery. This white and chambray-blue exterior is designed not only for an attractive, signature look, but also for functionality.
The top cover is machine washable, with simple cleaning instructions:
- Zip off the upper portion of the cover;
- Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle;
- Tumble-dry on low, or air dry.
