Silk & Snow Updated Their Hybrid Mattress, Making It Softer
As the cost of materials has shot up, Silk & Snow has been able to keep their mattress prices relatively stable; they raised their prices back in December of 2021, but only by $50. Meanwhile, other hybrid mattress brands have raised their prices by hundreds of dollars to maintain the same quality during times of soaring prices on raw materials.
To do so, Silk & Snow made some changes to its top-selling product line. For one, they found a new supplier for their steel coils. But more noticeably, the construction of the product itself was changed, moving from three layers of foam to just two. Where the 1-inch transition layer used to be, now the cooling gel foam layer below has been expanded by another inch to fill that space.
The look and the name of the mattress are the same. But the feel and performance of the mattress are now noticeably different. (Not all customers are happy; read two recent critical Reddit reviews here and here.) According to the engineer test results, this latest version of the S&S Hybrid has better edge support and motion isolation. It’s also noticeably softer than its predecessor. Though that might come as a concern to heavier individuals and those who prefer firmer mattresses, such as stomach sleepers, the softer mattress will likely feel more comfortable to teenagers and lightweight individuals.
At $900 CAD for a queen, the Silk & Snow Hybrid faces stiff competition from other popular Canadian hybrid mattress brands like Logan & Cove ($999), which offers a 365-night trial and free sheets, pillow(s), and a mattress protector with every mattress purchase.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
Silk & Snow is available for purchase online and is delivered free of charge throughout most of the US and Canada; however, shipping fees do apply for some remote locations. The mattress arrives in a cardboard box that requires two people to move. Our mattress took 6 business days to arrive in our Edmonton location, though like many online mattresses, Silk & Snow typically arrives within 3–10 business days after placing your order.
The Unboxing
The mattress is simple to unpack. Once out of the box, it needs to be removed from the protective plastic layers. The unwrapped mattress should fully expand within a few hours.
The Look
The Silk & Snow Hybrid has a Euro-top design. The sleep surface is covered with white tufted fabric, while the dark blue sidewalls are styled with lattice stitching.
The Feel
Silk & Snow has a medium feel, which is slightly softer than other single-firmness mattresses in the mid-market price range. The tufted sleep surface has a bit of softness and contouring as you first press into it. Press a bit further down into the mattress and you will begin to feel the resistance of the pocketed coils below, which push your hands back up to the surface of the mattress.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.

How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Silk & Snow Hybrid |
---|---|
Firmness: | 5.3 / 10 |
Edge support: | 7.8 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 8.0 / 10 |
Bounce: | 4.7 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
At 5.3 / 10, the Silk & Snow Hybrid is considered a medium mattress. As mentioned, this version of the S&S Hybrid has noticeably more sinkage than its predecessor, which had a 7.4 rating under the same test conditions. Shoppers looking for a coil-based mattress with a bit of “hug” may be interested in Silk & Snow.
Medium-firm mattresses are typically the top firmness selection for most sleepers, as they accommodate all sleeping styles and positions. Silk & Snow’s softer feel may be most comfortable for lightweight and side sleepers. Sleepers who weigh over 180 lbs might find this mattress lacking in support.
Edge Support
Silk & Snow has increased the edge support rating of its hybrid mattress with this latest redesign. While the previous model earned a 5.0 rating, good enough for an “average” score, this new version now earns an “above-average” 7.8 / 10. This places S&S closer to other Canadian competitors like Hamuq and Logan & Cove.
The S&S Hybrid includes a thick foam encasement around the lower edges of the mattress that helps lend support to the edges of the mattress.
Motion Isolation
Hybrid mattresses are not generally known for their motion isolation. But in this case, the Silk & Snow Hybrid earns a very respectable score of 8.0 / 10. Again, this is another improvement over the firmer preceding model, which earned a score of 7.0 / 10. Softer mattresses tend to have higher motion isolation scores than their firmer counterparts.
If motion isolation is important to you, you may want to take a closer look at the Douglas mattress, which received best-in-class motion isolation despite being a medium-firm mattress.
Bounce
Coil-based mattresses are usually bouncier and more responsive than foam or latex mattresses. This latest version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid earned a bounce rating of 4.7 / 10, which is slightly less bouncy than the outgoing model, what we would consider an “average” rating for a hybrid mattress.
Mattress Construction: What’s Silk & Snow Hybrid Made Of?
Construction | Silk & Snow Hybrid |
---|---|
Mattress height: | 12" |
Number of layers: | 3 |
Comfort layer: | 1” quilted cooling gel foam and holofiber |
Transition layer: | 2" gel memory foam |
Support layer: | 8″ pocketed steel coils |
Cover materials: | Polyester |
Machine washable: | No |
Made in: | Canada |
Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Layers
Silk & Snow Hybrid contains three layers. The individual layers work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support, with an emphasis on softness.
- First layer: 1 inch of quilted cooling gel foam and holofiber fill. This top layer adds a touch of softness to the top of the mattress to aid with pressure-point relief.
- Second layer: 2 inches of gel memory foam. This transition foam replaces two layers in the previous iteration of the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress. Not only does the transition layer help shape the overall feel and firmness of the mattress, but it’s infused with cooling gel to help promote heat dissipation.
- Third layer: 8 inches of pocketed coils. This bottom layer of tempered steel coils makes up the foundation of the mattress, offering responsive support and motion isolation. Certain sections of this base layer are intersected with thicker coils to assist with spinal alignment.
Silk & Snow Mattress Cover
Like the company’s original mattress, the Silk & Snow Hybrid has a two-tone mix of white and navy blue polyester. While the top of the mattress features a bright white surface with diamond tufting, the sidewalls are decorated in navy blue fabric styled with lattice stitching.
Silk & Snow used to include antimicrobial silver in their mattresses covers to ward off most bacteria along the sleep surface. The company now uses a different, undisclosed antimicrobial agent for the same function. Though the S&S website lists spandex among the cover fabric materials, the law label on our test mattress listed neither spandex nor the antimicrobial material in question.
Bed-in-a-box mattresses sometimes have removable and machine-washable top covers. The Silk & Snow Hybrid does not have a machine-washable top cover and is spot-clean only.

Final Thoughts on Silk & Snow Hybrid
The ability to compress and roll coil-based mattresses is still a fairly new innovation, having only been around for a decade or so. As a result, hybrid mattress brands like the Silk & Snow have not had the same amount of time as their memory foam counterparts to grow market awareness and establish massive customer bases.
Rather, customers who are initially drawn to hybrid beds are most likely to begin and end their search at traditional retail stores. Because of the nature of the market, successful online hybrid mattress companies have to create a luxury product like Logan & Cove that customers can buy at a heavily discounted price.
To Silk & Snow’s credit, they have managed to develop a product that offers a number of features mattress shoppers want most while still staying on the right side of $1,000.
