A recent sleep survey conducted by Douglas.ca, a leading Canadian online mattress brand, revealed over 46% of Canadians are willing to pay more for a product that is environmentally friendly. The data proves that Canadian consumers are prepared to spend a little more on sleep products that are easier on the environment.
Though it’s clear that Canadians are increasingly seeking out green services and products, it’s crucial to understand that they may be selective about which they pick based on the merits of environmental claims. Authenticity is a critical factor here, as consumers are savvy enough to check credentials and customer reviews to better determine which brands are truly as green as they claim to be.
“By manufacturing and shipping exclusively in Canada, our carbon footprint at Douglas is significantly reduced. All three foam layers — fabrics, covers, and even packaging — are sourced from a Canadian supplier, and the finished product is crafted in Ontario, Canada,” said Prochazka, CEO of Douglas.ca.
Interestingly enough, over 50% of Canadians from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia said they would be willing to pay more for a green product, while a mere 42% of those polled in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan stated that they would dish out extra dough for the environment.
“The Douglas mattress has always been about our firm commitment to environmental sustainability, so we wanted to know how important green values are to our fellow Canadians. We weren’t surprised to find out that almost half of those surveyed would be willing to pay a little extra for a product that’s eco-friendly,” said Prochazka.
While the difference was slight, the poll showed that men were more willing than women to get out their wallets to support eco-friendly products. This may come as a surprise, as men are sometimes thought of as lagging behind their female counterparts when it comes to caring about the environment.
Just 44% of women surveyed said they would give up their hard-earned cash for a green product, while 48% of men are willing to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to a reduced carbon footprint. Over 55% of female respondents indicated that they “just want the best price” when it comes to their purchases.
Although 55% of people surveyed stated that saving money was the most important factor, almost 45% responded that they would pay more for a product that was made in Canada. Furthermore, around one in ten of those polled stated that they would pay as much as 20% extra for a product with the “Made in Canada” tag.
When we purchase Canadian products, we have a direct effect on our economy in constructive ways. Every single dollar we spend in Canada has a far-reaching impact that exceeds that of the profits reaped by the businesses who receive our money in exchange for services or goods. No matter what sectors and industries we are employed in, we are all part of the cycle, which means buying products made in Canada just makes sense.

When those surveyed were asked how they rate their quality of sleep on a scale of one to ten, the memory foam mattress owners reported higher satisfaction. 27% of memory foam mattress owners ranked their quality of sleep as an eight out of ten, while 25% of innerspring mattress owners ranked their sleep as just a seven out of ten.
This is in line with poll results, which demonstrate a general trend toward better sleep quality, lower incidences of missed work days, and less sleep lost due to medical or health reasons for memory foam sleepers. As it turns out, investing in a memory foam mattress may be a smart bet from a financial standpoint, since poor sleep could cost you through indirect means — such as lower productivity at work due to fatigue.
Finally, for innerspring mattress owners, 31% reported health or medical reasons as their number one reason for losing sleep, with only 21% of memory foam mattress owners citing health or medical reasons for lost rest. The same poll showed that 27% of innerspring sleepers report sleeping less than 6 hours per night, compared to just 21% of memory foam sleepers stating that they suffer from a similar lack of sleep.
